Confedrate Pensions
Editor Press and Standard :—
I avail myself of the privilege of
your columns to say something of
the history of above matter in
our State.
Previous to the year 1902.
South Carolina gave but a small
amount to pensions for confeder
a he soldiers. In the year 1901
the matter came up before the
S. C. Divison of United Confed
erate Veterans at their annual
reunion in Charleston, and
committee was appointed of one
veteran from each congressional
district (the writer being the
' one from this district) to aitw
upon the legislature at its next
i session, amf urge upon them the
necessity and justice of a raise
in the same. The entire com
mittee went, and spent three
followed suit, and last winter,
Florida did likewise; each giving
at same time a reasonable aiioont
to all widows over 60 yeari of
ago. Will the dear old State,
who tired the tint gun at Fori
Sumt?r, i*e a laggard tu the race?
I trust not.
JThe confederate camps through
out the State are taking the
matter up. Many will send in
overtures to the next convention,
-
amongst tltem Camp Heyward
No., 402 W. C: V. of which the
writer has the honor of being
commander) the only camp in
Colleton.
Its overture, signed up by its
otlicers, is now in tbe hands of
the Kev. F. < >. S. Curtis, the
popular pastor of the Baptist
church here, who is our Chaplain,
and Chairman of our delegation
to said re union, who has made a
study of the matter, and who
will on August 12th at the next
convention to be held in Green
ville S. C., present the matter
before the U. C. V .’s with his
well know fore and eloquence.
This is the only and proprer way
to approach the legislature, that
is through so augnst a body as
the U. C’V.’softhe State. All
other plans must fail.
We look forward with confi.
dence u> the result, and trust
thaUhe Palmetto State will align
herself in the race with her sister
States of the South, and will be
willing to say that tbe time has
arrived for the confdorate soldier
to be pensioned liberally not as
an index of his proverty, but of
his patriotism, just * as she did
for the soldiers of the first revo
lution, those of tbe war of 1812,
and those of the Mexican war.
