The following suggetilioiiii are from a bulletin by the Mlaaouri board of agri culture: Ikm't drive too fast. Itou't walk. Get on the drag and ride. Ikm’t wait for your nelKhitora to taka hold. They may be waiting on you. Ikm’t wait for the big grader to come and Hhn|»e up your road. Ail you can do find will help to make tba work of the grader (icrmancnt. Don’t try to drag with one piece; use two. One will acoop out the hollow, in the road and dee|>cn them. When two are used the one keeps the other up. and soon the hollows will have filled and become level like the balance of the road. Dyn’t wait for good roads until the city folks begin to talk about mac adam at public ex|H>nsc This will cost from $3.0U0 to $5,000 a mile, and for country purimacH, where there la no heavy hauling, It ia no better than, not as easily maintained ns, a road proi>cr- ly made with the drag. Five dollars a mile with a proper use of the road drag will keep the oniinary country road that is properly drained, graded and bridged or oulverted in first class condition nine montha in the year and make it a fairly decent road the other three montha. But. thia cannot be done In one year or two. The longer the drag ia uae<1 intelligently the better the road will become until finally It Is oval and smooth and hard and elas tic. An example of the better constructed gravel ronds Is that extending from Marlboro to Washington, which was built originally us a toll road. An economical form of const met Ion is to use the gravel as a support for a tnaeadatn surface where 'the travel over any particular thoroughfare would warrant such an Improvement. The crown or transverse slope of a road should only be sufficient to carry the surface water to the gutters. On dirt 3 roads where ruts are easily formed the slope needs to Is* more than on a macadamized surface, but never suffi cient to cause inconvenience to travel, tine Inch to the ff*6t or seTeu and a half inches on n fifteen f<M*t mad will Ik* found aitout right. A good tunendaru road does not ordinarily need so much crown, deluding on the grades. On grades up to and Including four feet l-er hundred one-half Inch to the foot Is sufficient; from four to and Includ ing six feet |>er hundred three-quarters of an Inch should be nl)ow<*d. A trans verse slope of more than ope inch |>er foofglves t*»o much list to n wagon when at one side. The advantage of as fist a road as |»ossible la the lessening of the tendency for the travel to keep to the center of the road and the con sequent avoidance of the fonuation of ruts and a horse path. There are many counties in Mary land where gravel of excellent quality is ^abundant and where at the same time there is very little stone that Is fit for road construction. The gravel, however, properly applied will make most excellent roads, far aui>erior to any earth road. and. while net possess ing the wearing qualities of hard, bro ken atone, will answer sufficiently well for those country roads that have com paratively light traffic. On roads hav Ing very heavy traffic It will be found in the long run to be cbea[>er even at a vary much greater first cost to use a macadam construction owing to the rapid wearing of the gravel mad under such circumstances and the conse quently large expense for maintenance. A good, gravel can always be told when inspected, ns It stands In place In the pit Whenever It Is hard and compact iu the bank ajid requires the use Of the pick to loosen It. It w ill form a hard and compact rood. Gravel which contains a small amount of fer ruginous clay ami has angular, rough fragments of stone Is ‘' .* l**st that can lie obtained. Gravel mixed with snnd or composed of smooth, rounded frag ments of stone does not compact and form a hard, smooth mad surface and Is of little use except for general fill ing. To get the best results from gravel which Is formed of various sized frag ments It should he screened, nil pieces two Inches In size l»clng thrown to one side. There are found In many places gravel deposits which contain few fragments oyer two Inches. Such grav el does not used to be screened, but could ha apmad upon ths toad directly ‘Trogp the pit if bus too samdy The two lack gravel fes spread upon the roadbed t» such a dajfffc that when rolled It wWk have a thdAhasa of three of tho aaMffif gravel. AN ASPHALT ROAD. New Jersey to Experiment With Mix ture of That Praduct With Dirt. The New Jersey state department of highways Is to construct tn Mercer county an experimental mile of a new automobile road, the plans for which State Road Supervisor Robert A. Mee ker recently obtaiuisl Iu Kansas City. Mr. Meeker says the new method of construf-tion is simple and cheap, that It Is self healing when broken and therefore practically Indestructible, that It improves with age, that it Is mud- less, noiseless ami almost dustless and that it is not slippery even when coated with ice. In the building of the road the origi nal soil is finely pulverized, mid then Into this there is worked a mixture of hot asphalt, the whole mass l»eiug firm ly miled In the finishing Breaks are quickly repaired by traffic, the weight of wheels cementing them together. The base yields slightly to heavy traf fic mid then regains its original shape. It Is equally go**! for horses and auto mobiles. If the experiment proves a success. It Is likely that the result will lie a radi cal change In the mad building metb- • ds of the state of New Jersey, with the substitution of asphalt for the mac adam process now used. 0 Million a Year For Roada. Connecticut still lends in the good roads movement as a state. She was the third to got Into It, New Jersey tK*lng the first, four years before her, and Massachusetts the second. In 1893. Now Connecticut spends $1,000,000 a year, while the first spends hot $000,- 000 and the second but $100,000 less than that Connecticut spends the Hu gest amount per capita for good roada by far. the only other statea whoa* total annual appropriations are larger being New York, with $5,000,000, and Pennsylvania, with $1,500,000. bat both states are vastly largsr than little Connecticut , J{ Bad Reads, Indeed. T It is no wonder that tbe granger! art speaking pieces In favor of better roads, as tbe mud is something formi dable on the country roads. At East Longmendow. Mass., one of the churches was closed on a recent Sun day on account of the muddy condition' of the roads, ways the Hartford Times. A Hartford funeral party, driving to Cromwell, found the road^ impassable In some places, rendering It necessary fo tfike to tin* fields. The milkmen and teamsters declare that they “never saw the Ivat »>f It." ami the chauffeur who g ’s off the macadam Is entitled to a premium. t The Cheapest Roadmaker. The “goo.l ro«<V* without .money** movement that has by pieaus of King’s split log nvnd i drag converted tbe slough boles of the “com bejt” roads Into model turnpikes Is extending to the eastern states, where n.ost roadsf are either very good*or vc+y had. says Garden Magazine. Mr. King Is arrang ing with tbe various state hoaiiU'^uf agriculture to give a series of pracUbat,. demonstrations of the use of his Co- vice on eastem roads where the ceas of road dragging Is more doubt of sand and rocks. f i\
