J ^MgkSml^bevemea Old Inhabitant Think* Country Towaa Offar Mora Happinoao. *Tp at the depot Just now,” said one of the old Inhabitants, ”1 taw several of the Itoys get off the train to spend the holidays at home. They’ve come back to the old town from the city, and I’ll bet my bull pap against their turkey dinner with the home folks that most o( ’gm would remain right here In town If they were not asham ed to say that city life la not ap to their expectations. And between yon and me nnd the barn door I am strongly inclined to think that nine out of ten of the boys who go from any country town to a big city would make a better winning in the race of life If they would stay at home and grow up with their own community. ^ went to the city when 1 was a cob and stayed several years.; But 1 was homesick all the time. v Tbe young fellow in a great city holdhig a Job and working so many hours a day for somebody else Is sot by any means |n such an enviable position ss some of the people still In tbs.country tow are Inclined to think. ”1 recall that when 1 was living In tbs city many years ago, working os ary for a fassons establishment, the local paper hero once printed a notice about me that made me laugh out of one aide of. my mouth white I cried out of the other. According to the home pnpW, I Was *00 the highroad to for- tone In the city.' I was bolding highly responsible post with s great concern and making good, nnd nil that sort of thing. Tbs CscW ss to my ro- apooflhte psrittou jrgjfi aU right, hot It cost me two or three times ss much to llvs there ss It dig Suck home, ate at the end of the year I usually found my bank account no bigger than would have been h^d I remained at home and kept os working In Brown's general store. “Finally I resolved to face the mu sic and come back boms. Tbs word home means something in n small town too. Aa you know, I have a pret ty good boms, and 1 own it, no mort gages, nnd when the flowers bloom in the front yard every spring 1 com pare my house and lot with the rented cell l.qaed to occupy In the city great ly to the advantage of the bouse and lot I’m not rich, hot I'm comforta ble. If I had stayed In the city, per haps by now r might have lad n large bank account—and perhaps mot But one thing is sura ss shooting—1 would not have had so many good friends nor half so high s standing in the city as I have here at home. "My advice to the boys,'* concluded the old Inhabitant Is to think two or three times before they leap into s grant city. In most cases they become mere cogs In a huge commercial wheel, the motive power being operated by somebody else. I may be old fash ioned, boys, but I am Arm in the con viction that It la better to be an entire minnow In a small bnt clean and peaceful pond than to be the tail of a large flab In a stormy ocean.
