I happened to be in Walterboro and Maj Howell asked me to come up into his office a few minutes, and when I went he asked me if 1 had any objection to the e?— being settled by refunding the money. 1 told him that it made no difference with me as I had not got any of the money nor did I know who had, and I did not intend to pay a cent oftt, which I never did. But who paid it I am at a lorn to know and before I left Walterboro I was told by Mai Howell that I need not come back to court the next week as it was settled and everything was all 6. K. mid that he examined the matter mtre fully and that I was justifiable in not paying anything, m he could not find anything against me in the case only when I had drawn my mother’s pension and a few other* which I have receipts from,—all except Mr Henry Kinsey who will testify that I gave his to Kjm, and the clerk holds my receipt, or should. The Board of Stewards held a meeting Friday in which they took some act ion, it is understood. For some reasons they have given out nothing to what they did, but it is under stood that they have the names of several boys and youhg men they think guilty. Their names are kept secret. It is not known what action, if any, will be taken. The effort seems to be to keep the matter as quiet as possible and to settle it out of court. This trouble fids been brewing for some time.
