IS growing early tomatoes for mar- Icet an Indiana farmer gives some In teresting Information lu American Ag riculturist. as follows: I And that to grow tomatoes very .early—say, have them commence to .ripen" during the first half of June, while prices are high—three things arc absolutely necessary—first an early variety, then an early start, and. lastly, an early situation. I have found hut one variety. Chalk’s Early Jewel, that combine* size, shape, -color and firmness tn^n high degree, but unfortunately It Is not one of the wary first early. A Prolific Variety. Of the first carlie* Maule's Earliest la my choice. It Is a rery prolific large red tomato, and If one Is willing to throw out one-half for culls the others will make a very salable grade of firsts. The quality Is of the l»est. and, iA this variety Is so very prolific, I believe that the one-half retained as firsts will measure up equally with the -entire crop of Acme. Dwarf, Champion or Dwarf Stone. Earllaua la very much like Maule's Earliest, only it has leas foliage and ts more subject to blight. I eow seed of Chalk's Early Jewel In greenhouse by Feb. 1. I keep the temperature rather low. 45 degrees nt night, lettuce temperature. Tliis makes nice large plants by May 10 that have fruit set the size of per simmons. Those set iu flowerpots are moved into glass covered frames the last week lu April. The glass Is taken off in mild weather and left off at night when I am sure that frost will not get them. Tills hardens the plants, and It would take quite a little frost after they have been set lu the held to se riously injure them. Muslin covered frames will often answer for this hard ening off of plants, i Watering Plants Under Glaee. I want to caution against overwater- Ing while the plants are under glass. It Is much safer to keep them too dry rather than too wet. When the plauts grow thrifty, with a purple hue at the lower part of stem, one may feel safe that they have light and water ac cording to their needs. If overcrowd ed and overwatered, the pl&nta ,^flll grow up spindling and with bleached stems. Rut h plauts will never do well If they do live. Land For Esrly Tomatoes. I prefer high land, sloping either t<» cast or south, for early tomatoes. Handy io!l would be best, but I have none but clay loam.
