V* 0* ’ I f|R WATSON 0 WANTS PhOTO- (jRAPHS FOR HANDBOOK. 0 Tbe following letter 1ms been received which ■ peakes for itself: Dear Sir; As yon are donbtleas aware tbe legislatnre at its last session made provision for the printing this year of a permanent hamlbook of the resources of the State, I offering to un dertake the work of preparation daring the vear. It is my purpose to make cr* this permanent book, one containing some 000 pages or more, ahd to have it folly illustrated. I have made a num ber of typical illustrations, which we have had to have made np in half tones. My work in this line hat been of ne cessity in those sections and locations where we stood any chanoe of getting photographs cr cuts already prepared. I am now writing to yon to ask if yon cannot collect and have loaned to ns all half-tone ents that yon may know of in the hands of any one in yonr communi ty, and if yon cannot collect and fur nish ns with photographs of an attrac tive character of subjects that would be of interest in such a book from which .« we could make the selections and then have the half-tones made. In a work of this magnitude I am compelled to rely in a large measure, on those who have the interest of their different communities at heart, to aid me, as it is a physical impossibility to cover the State personally in the collec tion of such data. The matter of time is a very important one In the under taking, as it i» my pat pose if possible, to get this book oat by the end of this year, and of course, the ^matter and particularly the cats, must be in baud early. I feel sure that yen will realize the importance to yonr commnnity of being well represented in the first per manent handbook published since ’S3, and I wish to urge that you give this matter your immediate attention, ol- I listing as far as possible, the coopera tion of manufacturers, stock raisers, pooltrymen and business organizations r * > ■ who may have from time to time had pictures mode. Please let me beer from yon as soon as possible. Very truly yours, E. J. Watson. Commissioner, Columbia, S. C. Any photographs sent to Ihe Press and Standard will be forwarded promptly to the department We think it important that Colleton should cot be left out of this handbook of the resources of Sonth Carolina. We have great faith in the future of this county and believe that all it needs is development. More energetic wjiite people is a great need at this time, and the'way to get these pec pie here is to lett them btoow what we have to offer. We hope, therefore, that .allpersons interested in setting forth -the resources of this county will send in at onoe to this office such photographs desired by the party; and any one not having photographs ought to heve them taken at onoe and forwarded.
