THURSDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1922 Union had a sober Christmas. Several men made the remark to us that they saw not one drunk man Christmas. It is something for which the community should be thankful. It tells, louder than words, that prohibition realy prohibits. The truth is, people are learning* mors sense. Several merchants have told us that they had n fine trade just before Christmas. Three merchants said this year was far ahead of last year, an J expressed themselves as being very much gratified over the showing. Wo have reached the conclusion that the cry of depression is more a figment of the brain titan a reality. Some people are using the cry of hard times to avoid paying their honest debts. Some have heard the cry of boll weevil until they have been seised with a gripping fear. The truth is, mis county is not in any sort oi .sad plight. The county, ns a whole, is in better condition than it ever was in its history. We advise merchants and business men to cease crying hard times and give honest attention to the conduct of their business. The farmer will do well to take the safe advice. The^e are some needless expenses that might be eliminated, but the fact remains that we are in reasonably good fix financially in Union county. It is probable that we are now facing far better conditions. There is ahead a general revival of business. L, There will/*"^ r?juch building during urrencj, 6y regis . , money at home. '* Aa the end of the greet revival, the greatest Hattiesburg has ever known, i is close at hand, the Hattiesburg American would suggest that this city e:;tend to this briliant evangelist, Gip- 1 >y Smith. Jr., ar invitation to return 1 here each year for the purpose of 1 holding protracted meetings. 1 It would be a great thing for Hattiesburg and the surrounding terri- ' tory to have Mr. Smith on its yearly s payroll, not necessarily to hold re- ' vivals, but, if not this, then to preach * a series of sermons. Not in the history of South Missis- 1 sippi has there ever been a man 1 among the people who has done so much to strengthen religion and place 1 it on a heart hnsis Hp has demon stinted that people must not only pro- ' ' fess religion, mut not only be "born 1 , again," but they must LIVE religion ?it must become a part of their dailylives. He has shown us our neglect of the Christ who died that we might 1 live. He has shown us that much de- 1 pends on us; that we must be willing 1 i to be saved, or it cannot be accomplished contrary to God's will. There's ' a way of salvation, call it plan, method or anything else you may. ( Gipsy Smith, Jr., is peculiarly fitted 1 for this work. God has made him a power in reaching the people. How happy all would feel if they 1 knew Mr. Smith would again come to 1 Hattiesburg in 1923! He has reached the people who have been difficult to reach heretofore, and 1 he has aroused the church member- | ship of the city to action. ' The tabernacle is a monument to his 1 " ability; we will use it when he comes ' again. 1 Why not put him on the city's payroll for life? Why not get him to have Hattiesburg as one of his s charges to visit yearly? The peopie here undoubtedly are able to raise the 1 money needed, and it would buoy us 1 up during the year to know that he ' would be back and help hold Hatties- ' burg for God and the blood-stained s Cross. c The American suggests an effort to 1 this effect. ?
