THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1922. 1 " ???? - _______ < Go o mr Harvey delivered a strong pjcch ttt the court house here last . ght. The court room was full to I wing, and the attention was .. arked'y good. The subject chosen by the speaker was "Citizenship." He . f r.h a high standard for the chief cuiive and a high standard for the dividual citizen. Obedience to the i.ws of the state, in his estimation, ? imp? rati v.e Officers of the law, r ^ er.ior to coroner, should take y their oath of office. We most heartily agree with Governor n the statement that the people . hould stand with the officers f the law, and should not seek, gh selfish interest, to override the 1 w. It must be a very difficult thing, indeed, to have petitions, perppeals and every conceivable method of pressure to withstand when acting as executor of the law. It is as Governor Harvey says again, he people get the kind of officers they t a'ly desire. Judging from the retr1 s of approval he ird on evi ry hand from people who heard vh .% his rpiech struck a respon. j.ve chord in the hearts of the hear ers. "That's the kind of governor 1 want," was heard on every side. And it is true, we do want a governor who will do his duty impartially, who regards the law a sacred thing end obedience to its requirements a sacred duty. And we do need, on the part of the citizen the same high appreciation of the law. Governor Harvey is doing more to pull Sout. Carolina cut of the quagmire of law lossntss than any chief executive the state has had in many a day. Th< shame of being a lawless people which has long rested upon our state will be wiped out if the policy of Governor Harvey is carried forward into the future. It goes without saying that bootlegs and all related lawbreakers, will not find easy going under the rule of the present guver ? _ viwr of South Carolina. And when ii is remembered that the lawabiding citizen has no protection save the law, it is not stiange that he be found endorsing Governor Harvey's policy of enforcement of law. Our cat says Governor Harvey suits him. Our cat says no man knows how far be will go when he starts down hill. Our cat says much depends upon a good start. ' Our cut says keep no company you are ashamed of. Our cat suys an ingrate is lowe.than a thief. mm Our cat says a man cannot help thinking, but he can choose the subject of his thought. Our cat says the laws were made to be observed, not broken. Our cat says don't forget the Santuc fair Friday. Our cat says a man has too few days U> spend on earth to spend even one day foolishly. Our cat says a good citizen will not wilfully break the law. mm Our cat says we suffer for our mistakes as well as for our sins. Our cat says bootlegs abound when patronage is pronounced. Our cat says red tape is the bane of highly advanced nations. Our cat says it would not be amiss to plant a turnip patch, avan at this lata day. Our cat says food conservation and food distribution are aa necessary as' food production. Our cut say* take a share in the cannery. a * Our cat says ignorance is a brisk; sail in the path of progress e e e Our out says quite growling and go Lo work. < ? Our cat says the thought of a dry ivorld brings gloom to the heart of the bibulously inclined. The Australian crane, one of the heaviest known birds, has the smallest wing surface, yet it flies the langest and most arduous journeys, and, with the exception of the eagle, rises he highest and sustains itself at the height longest. Up to less than 70 years ago all coal manufactured in England was made >n bond and subject to duty? as in the case of whisky today?and each h.)iling-pan was fastened down rV night by an excise-officer. For fifteen years Miss Florence E. Dillon, of Indianapolis has specialized in shorthand reporting of medical conventions and has become so proficient at it that her services are in demand by medical associations in many pares 01 tne united states. An Englishman has invented a hollow keel for steamships in which all pipes can be laid without piercing bulkheads, at the same time being easily accessible. Native ilawaiians are said to be facing extinction, and if the present ratio of birth and deaths is maintains the remaining life of the race will be only about 75 years. Among the wild bush tribes of tropical Africa, it is not etiquette for' the men and women to eat together. It is more common for all the men n one street to feed together. The women .do likewise.
