We certainly agree with Secretary ^
Weeks that the nation's military policy
cannot be adequately sustained j
with a regular army of less than 13,000
officers and 150,000 men. Even ^
that number is all too small. The total
army is not large enough to police
half a dozen large cities. Of course, J
.' case of war our army would be
but the skeleton upon which to build
an adequate army. It is not sufficient '
for that when cut to less than 150,000.
The present army of 12.000 officers ^
and 125,000 men is inadequate, even

when no war threatens.

Able scholars the world has, many (
of them. Great thinkers, driving the
benefits of their discoveries to mankind
are worthy to receive the homage
of men. We would not take from
such individuals the least bit of honor
due them. But there are In the world
charletans whose only claim to greatness
is the noise they make. They
are the product of modern methods
of advertising:. They have made no
discoveries worth mentioning:; invented
nothing: of benefit to mankind; propounded
no theory that has led to
blessings for the world. They have
caused considei-able noise in the land.

It appears to us that Mr. McAdoo
has spoken the truth. The Republican
policy of robbing the poor to swell
the already bursting coffers of the
rich is enough to damn the whole
outfit of them for all time.
We have been trying to analyze a I
certain type of pessimism that always
manifests itself during a period of
business deflation. Men, who under
ordinary conditions, are pleasant,
agreeable and cheerfully happy, seen
to become transformed into scowling,
disagreeable and boorish individuals,
with not a good word for anything
01 anybody. oNthing pleases them,
nothing draws forth n good word
from them. In thinking it over, we
have concluded that the trouble is that
such men are untrained men. They
are not by nature, the embodiment of
gloom that they appear to be. They
are merely "thinking out loud." Thtspirit
of fear that the face predicts
and the words reveal are in the heart
all the while. The trained man is better
able to hide his fear; indeed, may
have less of fear to hide; for he ear
see beyond the dark clouds of today
the brighter skies of tomorrow. II

Joe Mundy's family believe him
possessed of this strange power. Recently
one of the children, whole
playing near the house, cut a toe nearly,
and the story goes that a playmate
ran in haste for the mother, who kept

there and he would heal it. They
claim he did.
He also tells a story of being able
to heal animals as well as people. A
mule, whie powing in a field, stepped
on a broken bottle and cut a gash
in bis foot causing great loss of blood.
The healer was sent for. He approached
the mule and looked into his

the reply was made, "Well, he was a
