S., at a ragr meeting of taid chapter bald *>ber 10 th.) tobert Morris, the founder of the ler of the Eastern Star was born tr Boston. Massachusetts, August t, 1818, and died at La Granke, ., July 81st, 1888, at the age of yeurs. Jrother Morris was made a Mason Oxford, Mississippi, In 1846. He s later elected Grand Master of the ind Lodge of Masons of Kentucky 18.r>8. He visited the Holy Land in .8 in the interest of Masonic rerch. He was the author of "Freesonry in the Holy Land" and many ier books relating to Freemasonry, r 40 years he devoted his life in the erests of Freemasonry. Dur present system of the Order the Eastern Star was founded by bert Morris in 1850 and the de?ea were first communicated to his Fo, Miss Charlotte Mendenhall, iom he married in his 25Jrd year lile teaching at Mt. SylvnYi Acadiy, Oxford, Mississipi. It was he 10 composed the lectures and prcred the ritunl ahd named it "The istern Star." It is said that the deees were first communicated in his m parlor where he invited a ne'gh. ring Masor and his wife to join th his own wife. That eminent Freemason, Albert G, ickey, tells us that the Adoptive te or Female Mosonry which it is mmonly called was established in igland in the seventeenth century, der the patronage of Queen Henria Mar a, daughter of King Henry of France and wife of King larles I of F.ngland. After the exntion of her husband she escaped France introducing the rite there 1730. And after many changes and late as 1830, this same adoptive lite is known as "The Five Jewels ol ? Orient." Therefore according te r distinguished Brother, Albert G, ickey, our present order is an offring of tnat ancient Adoptive Rite. Robert Macoy, an illustrious Freeison of the State of New York, whe vised and put into book form "the inuscripts containing the lacture? d degrees of the Eastern Star writi by Brother Morris, tells us that loptive Freemasonry was introduced x> this country in 1778. In a paper entitled, "Rob Morris, m and Mason," read by Hon. R. T. owe at the 103rd anniversary of i birth of Robert Morris, held at grange, Kentucky, August 31st 21, Dr. Morris was a traveler, his~ian and antiquarian. He was a ifound scholar, and the most casual iders of his books cannot fail to impressed with his intimacy with i dead languages and the classics, s interest in numismatics and anlues seem not to have been actuid by a vanity to call from storied i or animated bust back to Its manin the fleeting breath, but from a icere desire to establish forever in b minds of the craft the ancient igin of Freemasonry. It was this me laudable ambition that caused n to visit the Holy Land in 1868. Brother Morris composed 300 Malic lyrics and after the approval and nction of 1,000 distinguished Mais in all parts of the United States, nada and Great Britain was crownpoet laureate of Freemasonry at j Masonic Temple in New York Dember 17thi, 1884. Writing in 1884 he said: "Being that time an active traveler, nervs, wiry, elastic, unwearying in work, ling little for refreshment or sleep ipread abroad the knowledge of the istorn Star wherever I went, equally border communities, where ladies me in homespun,Vas in cities where i;AO ii J iico vainc in nanus, nit" ni'W lltiee was conceived with ardor an(] logized in strongest terms so thai ery induction led to the call foi >r?\ Ladies and gentlemen are still ing who met that immense assem. ige at Newark, New Jersey, in 1853 d the still gi eater one In New York ty a little later, where I stood up two hours or more before a breathis and gratified audience, and night to bear all that I could draw >m the Holy Scriptures the Talmud rl the writings of JosephuS, concernr the five heroines of the Eastern ?r." he order of the Eastern Star is, no jbt, the greatest female organizan in the world. Its lectures and e degrees appeal to the best in manid. It io believed to be the fifth ges< fraternal organization and the gest female order in the world. In 18 it had nearly 900,000 members 1 its membership roll is increasing the rate of 50,000 a year. The stern Star was the first to establ a Masonic Home in'the state of nsas. The order is doing a noble i glor'ous work for Humanity oughout the United States of terica. lorses work up to their necks in waters of the lower Columbia er, Oregon, drawing the great les with the catches of tons of non.
