Electric Trolley Lines Swinging Upward Now York, May 4.?The earnings ;>f electric trolley lines, an industry 34 years old today, are improving steadily in cities but the interurbun lines of the country have not yet felt the upward swing, according to a statement issued by Robert I. Todd, president of the American Electric Railway Association. His statement is based on the re vised operating returns from 180 companies, representing more than 50 percent of the total lines of the country. Of the number, 103 are city and 77 are interurban and their total operating revenue for 1921 was $437,498,853 as compared with $G50,149,805 for the entire industry in 1917. "The improvement is not due to any growth in the amount of business done," said Mr. Todd, "because the actual vilume of business shows a slight decrease over 1920. Improved operating condition^, however, have helped finance. "The outstanding feature of the reports is the increase in net income. In 1921 it was $22,022,722 as compared to $7,709,201 in 1920. In the face of a business depression, with unemployment at a maximum, this income figure is remarkable. "At the same time, however, traffic on the lines fell. In 1920 it was 7,600,190,270 and in 1921 7,144,332,920 a decrease of 0.1 percent. The operating expenses divided by operating revenue, dropped from 78.4 percent in 1920 to 75.2 percent in 1921, the source of the good showing and its bright promise for the future. That is helped by the reduction in labor and materials cost. "The net operating revenue increased from $93,910,054 to $108,315,732 or 15.5 percent. A $14,000,000 increase gives a greatly increased purchasing power and the results should soon be seen in equipment and better credit which has been almost at its lowest point in the last five years. "The interurban lines, while they have not shown the actual improvement of the city lines, are producing hopeful signs. They have a decreased operating expense and, with a return to more normal business to which they must look for both freight and passenger increases, their outlook is brightened. 'Tt is interesting to note that onefourth of al passengers riding on the 180 lines under consideration used transfers, a slight increase over 1920."
