They said: "Let the farmers l>ul'ul thorn. They are already spoiled and will not do a thing to help themselves." Of course it was but here and there a man, prolablv not more than three altogether, hut truth impels us to tell the facts, and we follow the impression. The idea seemed to be that the cannery would supplant the farmer in his sale of his products. The reasoning in both instances above mentioned is faulty, viseious and innately mean. It L just this attitude that is more responsible today for our present situatiin or. the farm and in the town than any other one thing. It explains why there is so little team work ar.d, consequently, so little progress Every man is so bu?y trying to thwart the efforts of others that he neglects his own oppor.unity. We did not tryto answer the town man who said he did not feel like helping the farmer for the reason that we felt so great :ti<-ni|ib jot nun niitjj ".>?? am r.oi ice; vile opposition worth discussing. But wc did expect better of the farmers. We diet not believe there was one farmer in Union County that would take such a silly \ iew of the matter. We do not now believe there are half a dozen holding to the. narrow and -ehUh view. But lest these two or -hroe may influence others, we bog to make some suggestions: One is that the cannery and potato drjing house will be built and both will be operated, in spite of the few in town and out of town, who knock the movement. If it had not been for our desire to help the farmer we would have proceeded upon an entirely different plan. Instead of calling upon the farmer to plant 150 acres of tomatoes, plans would have been made to have the eorjioration plant its own crop . This is not a forlorn thing. It is a fa< t ?hnt many canneries are so conducted. It makes a safer 'n\estmo.nt for the promoters. Again, take the potato drying house: We can today make contracts with growers in Southwest Georgia for a!' the potatoes necessary to conduct half a dozen potuto drying houses, and at JO cents a bushel. Of course the freight would have to b* add?*d but he;e 'he point: The neddline ' a ire ss going to play out whethei ! Jir-ro be a potato bouse or cannery; b? n* or rot. Hero is the reason: In changing from cotton as the one crop '<) food products as the atopic crops it is hound to come about that com-' rnercia! production of these things take place. Carolina went generally into the rais-j nig of such things, they would he selling upon the : treets of Union at a reasonable price. Distribution will see to that. We are facing a great issue. We are being forced by the boll weevil to raise food and feed stuffs. The whole process has shifted . to a commercial basis. Mexican Silver Production Mexico City, March 8.?Mexico produced 38.0 percent of the totai world production of silver in 1021 and the United States in the same period produced only 31 percent of th?' world toiui of 161,000,000 ounces says the American Chamber of Com merce 01 .Mexico. The year 11?2 i was classed as a bad year in silver mining, due to the low market price of the metal but despite this condition more than 62,000,000 ounces were taken from Mexican mines. Due to the revival of mining activity in Mexico during the closing months of 1921 and the reopening of nines in all parts of the country, the Chamber expects that the Mexican production of 1922 will greatly ex eed that of last year.
