SATURDAY, JANUARY 21. 1922.
Tiio.sc who heard Billy Sunday's
sermon here yesterday were more
than pleased. In spite of the fuct
mat ii was raining, me Duuauig was
packed and many stood outside.
Unless the business men of Union
come to the support of the Chamber
of Commerce, the organization will
be compelled to cease functioning. It
would, in our judgment, be a step
backward. A progressive town needs
an organization of this kind.
The response to our appeal for a
pot ito dry house subscription has resulted
in 2900 of the proposed $5000
subscription. The subscriptions to a
cannery now total 52 of .the proposed
100. We are on the last hulf of the
lap now*, and this will be the hard
pull. If you intend to help this movement,
come on in now. Do not wait to
see what some other man is going to
do. People who help themselves are
the people who win.
The stat-.' government must have
money upon which to run. The money
must come from taxation. Every one
of tho var-ous groups of citizens
thinks he is paying more than his
just portion. It will never be possible
to get people to see the question
from the other fellow's standpoint.
But it does seem that there could be
devised some simple, just plan of taxation
that would result in an improved
condition all round. No plnn
would please all; some plan can be
just to all.

Move to Split Alaska
Ketchikan, Alaska, Jan. 20.?Ketchikan's
commercial club has revive.!
an old move to split Alaska into two
territories and has voted to ask Congress
to make the division. It is
proposed that the southeastern or
"panhandle" section be made one territory,
leaving the northern section
to remain another territory.
Advocates of the move say that the
interests of the two sections nre different.
From southwestern Alaska
come most of the salmon and in thtis
section there nre prospects that great
pulp and paper mills some day will
bo erected.

California Fighting for
Gunnery Pennant
i Los Angeles, Jan. 20.?Thu new ji
I superdrcadnaught, California, flag- ol
| ship of the Pacific Fleet and mighti h
est floating fortress in the Pacific tl
has started out to take the gunnery V
efficiency pennant away from the
New Mexico, which the California CI
displaced as flagship of the fleet. h
Short range battle practice and n
short range director practice with fi
big guns of the new war craft were tl
held this month and the day torpedo
defense practice will start February u
14. The California has to crowd a p
year's practice in gunnery into six p
months, for half the season had pass- e
ed before she went into commission.
Other dreadnoughts of the Pacific
Fleet have been giving southern California
cities some of the audible sensations
of naval warfare, by going
through the night gunnery practices j,
a short distance offshore. Night ji
torpedo spotting practice, detecting p
by searchlights and star shells, main c
battery spotting practice to locate <J
the placement of the projectiles of
the big guns, night buttle practice, t
night practice runs were among the c
events in the January program. The ^
ware raft went far enough to sea to j;
prevent damage to the beach towns c
bv the concussion effects. ,
First Skyscraper to j
be Built in Germany t
Hamburg, Jan. 20.?The first skyscraper
in Germany will soon be con- 1
structed in the old business section 5
of the city of Hamburg. It will be ?
16 stories high, topping the highest building
in Germany at this time by j
five stories. j
Arthitects believe the erection of j
this building will institute a new era I
of skyscrapers in Germany, and ex- f
pect to see n number of similar build- [
ings constructed within the next few ?
years.
Unusual difficulties must be overcome.
The jitv water plant is equip- ,
ped to furnish water only to the 11th |
story and this brought up the ques- j
tion of fire danger and insurance, as
well as the probability of financial
loss in view of difficulties in renting ^
offices on the five higher floors.
Despite these difficulties the pro
motcrs have secured permission to ^
erect the structure "provided the *
building does not destroy the archi- *
tectural symmetry" of the streets. *

I Severe Winter in Europe '
I
Trieste, Italy, Jan. 20.?The severe
winter which tho whole of Central
Europe is experiencing has seriously
handicapped the navigation of the
Danube. The cold wave was so sudden
that more than 60 vessels belonging
to several nations hove be .mi
caught in the ice and will be forced
to tie up for the whole winter unless
an unlooked for thaw comes .n the
meantime.
French are Thrifty Nation
Paris, Jan. 20.?The French pco- _
pie have not lost their habit of thrift j
and taken to spending their certs
rather than putting them away in
the proverbial "woolen stocking." as
reported abroad. The French National
Savings Dank had in 1913 15,- (
066,000 depositors with 5,829,000,000 '
francs savings. Its latest report %
shows 15,783,000 depositors with 8,- *
