New International I Suspension Bridge Detroit, Mich., Dec. 7.?Plans for the new international suspension Ri bridge to connect Detroit and Winds* w l?i\ nist anonunced, show that it will 1, have the longest single span in the R world, measuring 1,802 feet, or 21 inches longer than the greut canti- m lever at Quebec. Of double-deck si const ruction the new link between C Canada and the United States will m :u commodate street car, automobile .ml pedestrial traffic on the upper deck and passenger and freight train wrvi e on the lower deck. Marring unforeseen delays, nctual onstr ration work will commence next spring and within four years the upper deck should be ready for C service. Without interfering with traffic on the highway deck, it is planned then to begin construction of the lower deck, which should be finshed in two years more. i he bridge and its approaches w'.ll _ 'nave a tota lweight of 107,00(1 tons, with eight cables carrying the huge span. Six of these cables will be 21 indies in diameter and two will be lt> inches thick; together they will support a pull of 14tj,000,000 pounds. Suspended from two towers each rising 1180 feet above the water, the span will have a width of 97 feet fo>the highway deck with two trolley tracks, two sidewalks and two roadways, while the lower deck will have four railway tracks and a 20 foot space for public utilities equipment. Rlectric locomotives would be used for traffic across the lower deck. Completion of the bridge will mean the end of the train ferries, which for vears have carried freight and passenger trains across the Detroit river, even after the opening of the Michigan Central tunnel. The bridge, which will be built by U~ nn n. ^ ? in*.- v/cwiuuiuu i ransit V/ompany and ho American Transit Company, with the approval of the Canadian and United States governments, will span the river almost from the center to the shore line of the two cities. Construction is expected to begin from he American side. The promoting companies have joon been authorized to issue $30, 00.000 in securities for the project. _ It is estimated that completion of ^ the highway or upper deck will cost approximately $ la,000,000. Purchase of shore space for the approaches is under way. , c Plans for the bridge were drawn t chiefly by Charles E. Fowler, of New J York. Associated with him in the t erection of the structure will be Geo. j H. Pegram, chief engineer of the In- ? terborough Rapid Transit Co., New 1 York; Professor William H. Burr, of } I New York; Colonel C. M. Monserrat, ^ Montreal; Professor C. R. Young of j the University of Toronto, and Pro- < fessor H. E. Riggs, of the University ? of Michigan. j . ? | Trade Week in Bamberg t i Bamberg, Dec. 6.?The people of Bamberg county, aided by the Ex- j tension Service worers, held at Bam- 1 berg. Nov. 28 to Dec. 3, what was i known as Exchange Week, during which many things were done in the c way of giving assistance in finding t markets for surplus farm products, .1 things that proved to be of present c lelief and will lead to future benefit. The idea of having a trade week was t planned by the business men of Bam- f berg, aided by County Agent J. I). ' Brandon and F. L. Harkey, agent in | marketing, Clemson College, and the . success of the venture shows the way < for others to follows. A large exhibit hall was used for the display of farm products, which 1 became a sort of local fair, and in front of this hall was the marketing committee's booth, here the marketing committee, with the guidance of Messrs. Harkey and Brandon, received samples of products, offers and quotations from buyers, and made sales oi contracts between sellers and buyers. Pecans, hay, peas, corn, sweet potatoes, sirup, etc., were listed with the committee, and many sales were made and many inquiries for samples and prices were answered from buyers in other markets, orders from such samples to be filled later as received. Orders were received for 30 cars of peavine hay and for various quantities of such things as pecans, sirup, potatoes and bids were received for two cars of hogs. Perhaps the feature of the greatest future benefit was the "educa tional" work done by the agent in marketing and the county agent in conducting demonstrations ad giving instructions in the packig, grading and handling of products to make them more readily marketable. In this way farmers learned more about packing and handling sweet potatoes, grading pecans, uniform canning and labeling sirup, etc., so that their products will be in greater demand and bring better prices.
