I Mr. Ashmore Vanderford brought ( the old vat a sack of fine Early Bliss Irish potatoes?second crop. The bob weevil will not hurt Mr. Vanderford. ' Some people, just a few of them, resent the newspapers publishing the account of notorious trials, such as that of Arbackle. They say the thing is revolting, indecent. But these same people doubtless read every word of the account, no matter how revolting. The fact is, such things cannot be hid-51 den. The very publicity is the one most helpful thing in bringing about a condition of society that will not tolerate such orgies. Often a ma.. does some crime that he does not want published. He has no sense of shame for having committed the crime. The only thing that moves him is a desire tc keep the knowledge of it from oth ers. It is not the business of newspapers to cover up facts, but to tell them truthfully, honestly and fearlessly. That's why you take a paper ?you want a picture of the day'. events, you want to know the fact ! that are transpiring. You, yourself.} will pass judgment upon the fares dis-1 closed. The law is the foundation of civil'-i i zation and the enforcement of the law | is the strongest safeguard of civiliza-l tion. Without law there can be no continuation of organized society, no protection to property and life, no standard for business enterprise, noh moral standard. Lawless people are! j uncivilized people; individual will, di-j rected to the accomplishment of self-! ish purpose reveals itself when law-i lessness prevails. Injustice, cruelty, oppression and destruction result' when the law perishes. A tribe emerging from savagery begins to express the will of the many. Certain rules! of conduct, certain obligations artagreed upon. These agreements artexpressed in rules, these rules are finally embodied into words. The writ-; ten law becomes the guide of the peo-: pie. But since these are always sane people mat retuse to be bound by the rules agreed upon, it becomes necessary to give teeth to the law, and so we erect jails, forge chains and build instruments of execution. If nobody violated the law it would not be necessary to punish. If everybody kept the rules we would need no jails, no ga! | lows, no sheriff, no policemen. But since humanity is far from perfection since there are many ready to take advantage of others, since the strong too often attempt to override the weak, we are forced to give the law its penalties. The law's penalties are for the law's violators, not for the obedient. Sometimes the law itself is perverted into an instrument of oppression. It then becomes an agency of evil and unites with other evil things tn destroy civilization. Bad laws are sometimes enacted and bad laws op press and destroy people. Bad laws are usually laws that give special privileges to a few and they do not express the will of the many. Bad laws are enacted through deceit, by bribery or under the spur of ignorance. Civilization under the dominion of bad laws is doomed to receive some severe lessons, and, when the lesson** are not learned, is doomed (o destruction.
