Member of Associated Press The Associated Press ts exclusively titled to the use for republication of | news dispatches credited to it or not j otherwise credited in this paper and j *lso the local news published theiein - i MONDAY. DECEMBER 5, 1921. Mr. Claude Sartor says he will j plant five acres to tomatoes, okra j and beans if the movement to have a | first class cannery here is put though. We feel sure such a venture would, af- I ter a year or two, earn money on the j investment. We would be under the necessity of turning out a strictly high i grade produce and gradually creat ing a market for our product. Who is , there among us that will help in such , an enterprise? There is no help like I self help. One of Union county's progressive j farmers made a trip last week to Lex ington county by automobile. He brought back several large cotton; stalks that were high as a man's head i but without any bolls, save two or! three half-matured ones. Upon re | ceiving the stalks we hung them up in our front window. No sooner had j this been done than another progres j sive farmer of the county came along | and objected strenuously to our display of boll weevil stalks. His argument was: "You scare the farmers and cause them to sell a bale of cotton, put the money in their pockets and take it home; you kill business and excite the people." We do not" agree with our critic. It does not save an ostrich to bury his head in the sand and pretend that he is safe. Knowledge is power; knowledge gives direction to power necessary to fight the boll weevil. We have said it before, and will say it again: The boll weevil will prove a blessing in disguise. But we must meet the issue. Our cat says loud talk is frequently ' linked to a weak argument. Our cat says a camel can go for; nine days without water, but who' wants to he a camel? * * Our cat says this is no time to give j ear to the pessimists. * Our cat says the people get the j kind of law enforcement they desire. Our cat says money hoarders help to kill business. * Our cat says an upright man walks j a narrow path. * Our cat says old Scrooge will soon 1 be going about telling the children j there is no such thing as Santa Glaus. * ? i uur cat says those who sow to the I wind need not expect to escape the harvest. !
