Our Correspondence Club had most enjoyable day Saturday, som seventy five persons being in attenc ance. Most of our correspondent were in the number. A few could nc attend. We missed greatly liavin them, and they missed a good timi Many predicted catastrophe?some body would surely get killed! Th worst thing that happened was broken spring that one car suffere< and which delayed us in Whitmire a hour. But Whitmire is a good towi and we found it pleasant to tarry fo a while there. The loyalty of our cor respondents is an asset that w prize more than we can tell. Governor Cox, leader of the Demo cratic party in the coming presidentia election, comes out squarely for th adoption of the League of Nation covenant. Senator Harding, the Re publican standard bearer, comes ou unequivocally against the league. Nov wre shall see just where the Americai people stand. We have all along con tended that the great rank and file o: the people approved the league. W< do not believe there has been anj real change of sentiment. The verj honor of America is at stake and wt do not yet feel that the people desire anything less than that America bear her part nobly in the great, worldwide movement for permanent peace. The iJeague Covenant, attacked so bitterly by the Republicans, not because of hatred toward the movement but to discredit the Wilson administration, is going to prove a boomerang for the Republicans. It will be the irony of fate, and a just and righteuos jurgment. L-4 * rom Carlisle, Santuc and Jones*. ? ville word comes that the movement * to have a cotton grader for Union County is meeting with splendid success. Union Township is not lagging, i , and J. A. Wilburn, the chairman of the i soliciting committee will have some very encouraging facts to report in a . day or two more. If Cross Keys, Bo- * t gansville and Pinckney will come up _ to the scratch, and we believe they . will, Union County will have a grader, that is, provided one can be furnished ) by the government. We are Btrong for U y a cotton grader, the more we think of ? 9 it the more convinced are we that it is b . a wise move, one that will help this h county tremenduously. Who is there ^ 0 that can be hurt by such a move? 0 Nobody. While the whole cotton sit- ^ _ uation will be put upon a more busi- J e ness-like basis. By all means let us g f have a cotton grader, if it be posf sible to secure one. Every day we do- n e Iny makes it more likely that when F j we put up the $3,000 there will not be enough graders to fill the demand. Nancy, France, Aug. 9.?France's ^ "Passion Play," rivalling that of tl n Obei'ammergau, has opened its sea- o r; son here after five years' of war's i, interruption. It was given, as it has y been since 1904, in the Passion The ater, under the direction of M. Pettit, the village priest, with his parishioners as the cast. The play, costum- S a ing, verse, music and equipment have ie been developed and improved since j the pre-war performances. jy There are 10 scenes depicting the :s Bible incidents from the birth to the resuiTection. The play runs from 9 a. m. to noon and from 1:30 to 5. PC g Intermissions between the scenes are y B filled by tableaux representing, prin- a cipally passages of the Old Testa- a 5- ment bearing upon the runninir storv. e The text, where it is not that of , the Bible, is the verse of various ^ a poets and the music is taken or adaptI ed from various composers. M. Pet- C ' tit says he has utilized from all n sources whatever he believed he yyj , needed to make a beautiful ensemble. j ' The naturalness of the players, none r of whom are professionals, critics *' .. said, was heightened by the deftness ? and ingenuity of the staging. One e of the difficult things to produce was TH the crucifixion, where the movement of the principal depicting Christ on the cross or, during the descent, might -p - easily be misportrayed. On the cross, . j the long white winding sheet is 1 draped under the principal's arms and bab e over the two arms of the cross. The fror s ends of the cloth, floating like wings, p|aj add much to the effect and serve - their real purpose by enabling the _rr I characters to lover the apparently dise inert figure, supported safely as he jt ii * is, by the cloth under his arms. an ! The play is to be given every Sun- ^ day until the middle of October. t,hir Stal r TRAIN HITS AUTO I com 5 KILLING THREE D f diar , Troy, Ala., Aug. 9.?Joseph E. pati Brannen, insurance man, John Col- ness ; quitt and his son, Frank, 14 years old, m ^ . were instantly killed near Andalusia Ala., early today when their automo- 'ess ' bile was struek by a Central of Geor- heal gia freight train at a crossing. babj NEWSPAPER DYNAMITED ^ this California, Penn., Aug. 9.?The not press in the office of the California that Sentinel was destroyed early today by an explosion which the authorities *or I believed, was caused by dynamite.
