F Gilchrist. ?Miss Natalie Hooton, of Chicon college, Columbia, was at home th< past week-end. k ?Cadet Fred Sanders, of the Cita del, Charleston, spent the Easter va cation at home. I % preached on the death and resurrection of our Lord at the Methodist and Baptist churches, respectively.- Sunday morning to large congregations The floral decorations of bott churches were beautiful and symbolic of the occasion. Appropriate musical numbers were rendered at each service which wert appreciated by the congregations. A1 the Methodist Sunday school, a special programme was arranged bj Mrs. S. O. Cantey, at which Capt. M W. Lever presided. Mrs. L. C. Smoah rendered a delightful reading, and the young people gave several beautiful selections in song. Child Drinks Gasoline. Florence, April 12.?Four-yearold Eugenia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Kendall, had a very narrow escape from death last evening when she drank part of a bottle ol gasoline. Within a few seconds aftei she had swallowed the stuff her moth er found her deathly sick in the bathroom. The little girl just was ablt to tell her mother that something she had drank out of "that bottle' had made her very ill. Medical aic was called immediately and her lif< was saved only by two hours of he roic effort. The little girl appears nearly re covered today and no further ill ef fects are apprehended. Carlisle Downs Bailey. Greenwood, April 12.?In a gam< which was dull up to the eighth bu which ended in thrills, Carlisle de feated Bailey here today in a 12 inn ing game 8 to 6. The poor fielding and base running of the Bailey nin< cost them the game. Cox and Saul; pitched well, Lilliard hit a home rur for Bailey on one of the longest ball; ever hit on the Bailey athletic field Large played well for Carlisle. E. Neelev, of Olar, was among the visitors in town Monday. While no special services were helc in the churches of the city, Rev. S O. Cantey and Rev. 0. B. Falls eacl Bridge Bill Basses House. Of much interest throughout the I lower section of South Carolina is the announcement from Washington that the bill introduced by Congressman Byrnes providing for the construction of a bridge over the Savannah river connecting the counties of Jasper, in South Carolina, and Chatham, in Georgia, has been passed by the house. There is 110 Savannah river bridge anywhere below Sand Bar ferry, a few miies below Augusta. The bridge in question would connect up the Columbia-Sat vannah highway with the Georgia - city. This highway passes through Bamberg, and as been completed - with government aid almost the en tire distance from Jasper county to the South Carolina capital. Carriers Leave Earlier, r ' Postmaster Knight states that he 2 has secured permission from the t postoffice department for the rural carriers out of Bamberg to leave on 3 their daily trips each morning at _ 9:30 o'clock instead of 10 as heretofore. This has been made possible by connecting Bamberg up with the ^ early morning mail from Branchville, this mail bringing in the the bulk of the mail matter in the morning. Patrons of the routes will observe * that the carriers are now delivering mail-a half hour earlier, and those mailing letters or parcels should 3 have them in the boxes a half hour 1 earlier than they have heretofore. The carriers on route 2, 3 arid 4 return to Bamberg at 12:30, and the s carrier on route 1 returns at 1 r o'clock. Invents Sprayer to Fight Weevils. The feautre * of this machine is that it has force 1 pumps which spray water upon the cotton plants to hold the calcium ar" senate which the same machine also f dusts upon the plants. The machine : is horse drawn and may be used in " daytime?a decided advantage over those that are used only at night af1 ter the dew falls. There is already a great demand for these machines.
