H n I I "This i I I ? T" ! I 1?4 i L 1 l -in p W. A. KLAUBER, Pre; p|| . B9T H I I ^ ^unQny^inu I ESTABLISHED APRIL, 1891, I Published Weekly at Bamberg, S. C. I Entered as second-class matter April I ^ 1891, under Act of March 3, 1879. I $2.00 PER YEAR. BFjy Volume 30. No. 53. [ Thursday, December 29,1921 1 I Now is the time for our people to j make the most of their opportunities. I The. year 1921 has only a few more ^__ days. Let everyone now take new | courage and new determination to I use the talents tfhev have to the best I advantage, and make the year 1922 | . the beginning of a new era in the I county's annals. With the rich farm lands, the variety of crops that may be grown, there is no reason for our I people suffering hard times much ! longer. The financial depression is [ country-wide, but normal conditions ' are fast returning. Ere another ! twelve months is pa3t, the country generally will have recovered its ; equilibrium. Bamberg county must ' p \ not lag .behind in recovering. I .The Herald would like to second the appeal of Bro. Cantey, of the |R Methodist church, for every person in |s. Bamberg to attend church next Sunday. Sunday is the first Sunday in the new year, and tjie first day of 1922. With a good many people goKi ing to church is a habit and a mighty good one,-not only for professing Christians but everybody else. It is a notable fact that the vacation spirit j among the people extends to church ^ going as well as other activities. Last Sunday, for instance, all the churches had less attendance than unsual. The same thing is true of the summer school vacation. Let everybody make a special effort | K'S". ' I V to attend services with the beginning of the new year, and make a newyear's resolution to attend divine E services every Sunday during the coming year, unless providentially hindered. There are many valuable farm products which have never had much attention in Bamberg county because it has been more profitable to grow cotton. Inasmuch as this is no longer true, it is to be hoped that these ci moi? ?ATTT CS pVl Q TIOQ UUUtIO Uioj nu n ua<u u vuuuvu here. One of these farm products is fruit. Very few farms are eq.uipped with peach and apple trees. It is usually not possible to purchase enough home grown peaches to make preserves, pickles, etc., or for canI; , r ' . . . While local condition! are not entirely favorable, it is said . to growing peaches in this county still we have seen some mighty fin< peaches grown here, which demon' strates the possibilities in this indus try. It is probable-that peaches can. not be profitably grown here for the markets, still the county ought tc raise enough for home consumption at least. Every farm ought to have some peach, apple, plum, cherry and other fruit trees. ? ^ m Bamberg county is to be congratulated upon the organization of the truck association here last week. That the field of trucking offers attractive possibilities in this section O ft A lwAA k A A vt ?A<a rnk ? k A A uao rtucau; uecjti piuvtrn. j.ue absolute necessity for finding money crops other than cotton has been the means of promoting this organization. .While trucking is a good money proposition, it also has its drawbacks, this being notably true in regard to the marketing of the products. It has been found advisable in other sections to market only through an organization. Various truck crops are eenerallv worth Drofitable nrices. but the proposition is to market them to the best advanage, and; it has been found that this can only be done through a central office. It is for this purpose, mainly, that this organization has been formed. The new association has the best wishes of the people generally, and it is hoped that a most profitable field of operations may thereby be opened. Likewise, the tobacco association promises to be of much value to the people. The matter of cooperative selling of tobacco has gripped the people of the entire tobacco belt. Most other counties in this state have already been allied with the tobacco association. Millions of pounds of tobacco have already been signed up to be sold only through the cooperative .marketing plan, which bids fair to upset en tireiy ine present most unsatisiactorv method of selling tobacco. That fair prices are not secured for the weed under the present plan has been demonstrated time and again. It'is often true that a basket of tobacco sold one day is resold the next for several c^nts a pound more or less, which clearly demonstrates that the method is haphazard, to say the least of it. Under the cooperative marketing plan, the planter will have a voice in setting the price for his product. He now lias absolutely none. He has to take what is offered or hauh his product home, at his option.
