. > ' * I WHAT "TUSSIC" REALLY IS. Interesting Analysis of Sample bj North Carolina Chemist. Not a few people, including som< Bamberg folks, might be interested in an analysis of a sample of "tussic' liquor submitted to a North Carolina chemist recently. A seizure of moon shine whiskey was made by Burk( v county, N. C., officers a week or twc ago, and a sample of the concoctioi was sent to J. S. Rogers, chemist o: the Burke Tannery. The sampl< was submitted without comment o] rvf what- thp Wfl! axxj ?? v" ? ? ? or the use it was intended for, witl the request that a chemical anlysi! be made. The reply of Mr. Rogers i.< very interesting, and is as follows; the reply being addressed to H. L Miller, chairman of the board o //.' county commissioners at Morganton N. C.: "The sample of liquor which yoi , submitted to me ' a few days ago marked sample No. 1 ML, has beei examined and analyzed and the re ? - | suits are given below: Specific gravity 0.934 Causticity as caustic soda 0.17 Nitrogen calculated as ammonia 0.17 Alcohol as ethyl alcohol..35.9 "The following materials, if pres ent at all, were in only very smal quantities: Tannin and potash. Chlo riaes were present, in veiy smai . quantities. Methyl alcohol may b< present but was not determined. "As to my opinion as the natun of this compound, you failed to in form me the use for which it was in-V tended. As it contains practically no tannin, its use in this industry is out of the question. The caustic al kili present would attack any mucous membrane subjected to its influence and its corrosive qualities would for - bid its use in a gasoline engine, although it does have some elements of fuel value. As a fertilizer it has only slight value, although its ammonia content and the presence o1 chlorides indicates the possible presence of the material of a manuria! nature sometimes used in fertilize! manufacture. It is undoubtedly 2 germic.de and disinfectant. It coulc be used in cleaning poultry houses - " J irni-min onH frnm OL HCt: dUU ULilCi 1C1U1IU, ? the animal nature of this solid content, I suspect this sample must have been used for that purpose. In anj ' , event it should be kept from all careless and irresponsible persons as, il ??? swallowed by mistake, and methyi ?? alcohol is present, it might cause fe ' .* blindness or other serious mental and physical troubles. It 'has a considerable fire hazard and fehould never be exposed to open flame. Bv. 4Trusting that this will give you ?e the information desired concerning this liquor," etc. GEN.
