BANK NEGOTIATING. Branchville Institution in Straits Owing to Present Stress. Branchville, March 22.?Negotiations between the officials of the Bank of Branchville and the state bank examiner are being continued with prospects of an early adjustment, stated L. H. Fairey, vice-president of the bank tonight. The bank is open as usual except that no checks are being paid at present. Owing to inability to realize on loans this institution postponed the payment of checks Monday and Mr. Fairey went to Columbia to confer with the bank examiner on the mat ter. This institution is solvent and the customers who appear to fully understand the situation, have evidenced no anxiety whatever as the assets of the institution are considerably in excess of the liabilities and the present situation, although embarrassing, is considered only temporary. Mr. Fairey stated today that everything appeared favorable for early relief from the present situation. * TWO WOUNDED IN DUEL. Barnwell Farmers* Quarrel Said to Be of Long Standing. Barnwell, March 27.?In a shotgun duel, which took place about five miles from Barnwell this morning, T.onnnrri Miles, white, was seriously wounded and Charlie Morris, also white, was painfully injured. Miles was shot in the chest, the hall passing through his lung and coming out of his back. Morris was shot in his feet. It is said that the shooting was the culmination of long standing ill feeling between the two men, who live on adjoining farms. Each claims that the other shot first. The attending physician said that Miles had an even chance of recovery. women opposing negro. Circulating Petition in Washington Against Treasury Appointment. Washington, March 26.?The women employees of the office of the registrar of the treasury are circulating a petition in which they will urge the secretary of the treasury to refrain from appointing a negro to the office of registrar. There is current a report that a \ negro, Henry Lincoln Johnson, of Georgia, will be appointed registrar The petition is not signed by male employees because they are not in vited to sign. The women preparing the petition are from all sections of the country and affiliated with ; both major political parties. beaufort ships lettuce. Crop Has Already Brought Planters More Than $275,000.00. Beaufort, March 26.?The Beaufort j farmers are still busy shipping let- , tuce and romaine. Last week 130 i cars of lettuce move? from Beaufort and so far this week the shipments for each day have been as follows: Monday, 60 cars; Tuesday, 43 cars; . Wednesday, 60 cars. This amounts to more than 100,000 baskets. The < market has been averaging from $2.75 to $3 per basket for the run of the car, so the crop cut up to the . cold wave Tuesday night has amounted to more than $275,000.00. The cool, damp snap has been just what was needed by the farmers for their lettuce, although it did not come quite soon enough to prevent a good deal of lettuce and romaine from becoming scorched and burned by the hot sun of Monday and Tuesday. The cool weather caused the lettuce to head up, turning in many of the scorch-el leaves, thereby ruining them for sale. Methodists Give Egg Hunt. Hnnp Mnrrh 17 TTnirm Metho dist Sunday school gave an Easter egg hunt Saturday afternoon for the pupils in a pine grove across Snake Swamp, near F. E. Cope's place, and a large crowd was in attendance on this pleasant occasion for the little folks. Some of the Baptists were on hand also, they having been invited to take part. A long table had been erected by Mr. Cope, on which was a variety and abundance of delicacies. Yesterday being Good Friday, the Cope graded school was closed. During the afternoon a game of base ball was played by the Cope school team and a team of the St. George school, some seven or eight miles from here, and as the St. George team consisted of a nine so much larger in size they ran it over the home team by a score of 35 to 7. As the weather continues warm and summerish at times, the farmers are putting in their cotton and corn with a vengeance. Some of them have held back, expecting a cold snap at Easter time, but as it has not dev.eloped so far, they, too, will get busy from now on. EGO WEIGHS HALF POUND. Perfectly Formed Egg in Shell of Larger One. Spartanburg, March 20.?A hen egg weighing a half pound was laid by a common barnyard hen in Spartanburg yesterday. The hen belongs to Walter Dennis, a negro living on! Hines street. When the egg was broken it was found that on the inside of the large egg was a large, well formed hen egg with a shell,! containing the white and yolk. NOTICE OF SALE.
