Thursday, Dec. 25,1919. We wish each and every one of our subscribers, readers and friends a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year. May the good year 1920 bring blessings of great magnitude to all the people of the city, the county, the state, the nation and the world. The Herald has published in its two preceding issues 75 letters from the tiny tots to Santa Claus. The Herald hopes very sincerely that every one of these letters will receive the careful consideration of good old St. Nicholas, and that the Christmas stockings will be well filled with the multitude of little things that please the juvenile heart. The year 1919 has brought blessings for which the people should be truly grateful. During this same period last year the entire country was enveloped in grief because of the taking in the great influenza epidemic of some of the country's best. Sca/cely a family but lost some loved relative. This year has also brought some semblance of peace?that is to say there is no longer any organized war. and for this there is cause for great gratitude. The great unrest among the people throughout the world is an aftermath of the war and will adjust itself in good time. Bamherg county has been blessed with great prosperity, and there is more money in the county than ever before in the county's history. That this prosperity is not general among all the people is probably the fault more of the individual than of general conditions. Instead of pursuing the same frugal habits as in less prosperous times, the average individual, ; white and colored, has elected during the past few years to join in the profligate expenditure of money, with the result that many persons are in a worse estate than they were during normal times. ?
