Following every war there comes a period of reconstruction. This con- A dition prevails even in the United E States at the present time. The A course which we take now will great- n ly determine the part which we will be able to take in the future. Wash- a ington said "Nothing but harmony, a honesty, industry and frugality are p necessary to make us a great and ^ppy nation." The United States possesses every one of these qualities ^ but frugality. Now we musts seek that. tj First, let us be sure that we know what we are seeking before we begin our quest. Frugality or thrift means only good management. Sensi- ^ V . ble management depends upon con- ' sidering the needs of yourself, your family and your nation, not only at the present but also for the future. ^ It is not only a man's duty to save for. himself but it is his patriotic S1 duty. Are you patriotic? Undoubted- n ? - H ly your answer will be in the anirma- -* tive. Then how do you show it? Do ^ you sing the Star Spangled Banner S and display silk flags or are you a ? real patriot who without much display works for the good of the nation? * By saving you increase the capital of n the nation and promote the thrift. d i jr . Saving promotes character; makes a better citizen; increases the gen- ^ - ' eral happiness. The United States is a wealthy na- a tion. It is, however, a nation which is known by the world as an extravai c gant nation. Although wages areJ higher and opportunities are great American people are not generally individually classed as well-to-do with ^ the people of other nations where opportunities are smaller. Money is easily earned, and as readily spent. Government census statistics show that sixty-six of every hundred persons dying in this country have absolutely no estate. Of every one hun- . dred persons who reach the age of ' * sixty-five there are only three whare not partly or wholly dependen P upon friends, relatives or charity for food, clothing and shelter. This co- r dition is not the result of anything * but extravagance. E t The future of our nation depends * upon the boys and girls of today. The way they are taught to spend money now is the way that they will always * * spend it. It is impossible to succeed * unless one can live with less expendi- a tures than their income will easily 3 cover. Teach the children to spend r wisely and conscientiously. Washington said "Economy makes happy t homes and sound nations. Instill it r . deep."* < < i QUAKER ACROSTIC. ( (Read both ways) 1 The man who saveth money ^ Hath his future guaranteed. Not only did the gallantry of our .merican soldiers help win this great luropean War, but the thrift of the .merican people played one of the lost important parts. It not only kept its own massive rmy going, but it has helped to feed nd clothe thousands of starving peole in other countries. Thrift among us was first begUD rhen our forefathers first came tc .merica, for besides liberty this was ne of the great causes of immigra* ion, as it didn't count for anything 1 the countries of bondage. The thrift of our forefathers helped lem gain the great war with Engmd, and so gave us our liberty and reedom. George Washington, the founder oi ae nation, had his thriftograms foi ae nation as well as for his persona] access. Here are some: "Econor lakes happy homes and sound na ons. Instill it deep." "Nothing but armony, honesty, industry and fru ality are necessary to make us a reat and happy nation." Now our a,sk has been so great in this gre?-i rar, and we have . had to lend so luch money that thrift means a great eal more now. We are being taught more about it lan ever before. Thrift means success and to make success you have to have system rith everything you spend and see hat you always have some of your inome to put in the bank. Let each lember of the family do a part ol he work and encourage them to e saving, allow the children a tee or their work and encourage them tc ave it and you will soon see still lore Thrift Stamps sold; they wil] tow to be War Savings Stamps. Just becuse the war is over doesn'1 lean'that we have to stop conserving ur food, but we must raise all that 5 possible, can all the surplus, use 11 perishable stuff and save the urn erishable. To be economical doesn't mean nol o have, wholesome pleasure, *nutriious food and proper clothing; we oust see that our income is enough o more than cover our expenses and lave enough for rainy days. We Americans are naturally exravagant people, but our women are earning each day to be more saving md are doing t&eir house work and ill their other work in a more busi less like way. One-half dozen nail-makers decided o go into business with a Tittle noney they had saved from theii earnings. This is now the $25,000,000 Steel Corporation of Steubensvflle, Dhio.
