CAR OWNERS SUFFER. J<y Riding at St. Matthews Proves Annoying. "St. Matthews, July 26.?Joy riding at night in stolen cars is becoming an undesirable pastime here. Within the past few weeks several cars have been '* stolen from the premises of the owners and used by unknown persons, i Some weeks ago D. Fairey's garage at his residence was entered twice and his car used, the last time the car being abandoned near his home. A few nights ago, the car of J. W. Tuck- !i er was taken from his premises and after having been abused was left about a mile from town. Last night 1 the garage of G. W. Fairey, which is * ~ ? ?- A -* V* i n on his premises, very ciose iu ui? residence, was entered and his car stolen and given rough treatment. < The work seems to be carfully planned. The sheriff will put on an extra vigilance campaign and if repeti0 tion of the joy riding continues, the chaingang may be enlarged. * The Curate's Egg. Don Marquis, the well-known humorist of the New York Evening Sun, says that his favorite story is , that or'the curate's egg. The curate was breakfasting with the rector, and the latter noticed that his guest was not attacking his egg with vigor. "'Isn't your egg good?" asked the rector. "Oh, yes, sir," said the curate eag-j erly, anxious not to offend his su-' perior in the church. "Parts of it, I "t. j .' sir, seem quite good." i - i ** All He Needed. ik." " A negro was on the stand in an Alabama court house testifying to the details of a shooting scrape. The witness told how the prisoner at the bar drew a revolver and how Henry ran to save himself. "You say Henry ran?" interjected the lawyer for the defense, v "Dat's whut I said." "You are sure he ran?" "Sho' is!" > . "Well, did he run fast?" "Did he run fa? Often he was not able to get home for dinner at night. He told his wife that he would phone her every day as to whether he could leave the office or not. Mrs. Benson was of a very thrifty disposition, and the following was her solution of the problem: "Sam, ifyou find that you can't be home for dinner, phone me- at exactly six o'clock. If the telephone rings at that hour,v I'll know it is you' and that you are not coming to dinner. I won't answer it, and you'll get your nickel back." Doing it Up Right. A colored woman recently lost her son, and she immediately swathed herself in black, even to the extent of buying, at quite an expense for her, black underwear. "Isn't that overdoing it a little, Ellen," askea her mistress?"wearing black underwear?" "No, ma'am," said the bereaved mother. "When Ah mourns, Ah mourns clear through."
