<? COLLETON TO GET FEDERAL AID. | Application Will Be Made and Construction Started Immediately. F. H. Murray, of the State highway department, accompanied by Engineer Martin, of Charleston, was in Walterboro Monday of this week for the purpose of conferring with the county supervisory board and members of the delegation in re* ference to the bridge across the Edisto river at Jacksonboro and the matter of federal aid. A conference was held at the office of Senator Padgett, with Commissioner Ulmer, and the entire matter gone over. It * was decided to make application for federal aid in building tne oriage, and to rush this work as rapidly as possible. According to statements .made by Mr. Murray, it is expected that this bridge can be started by September, and it can be built in two months. Following the conference with Senator Padgett and Mr. Ulmer the party then went to Representative Peurifoy's office and held a conference with him in reference to the proposed compliance with federal aid proposi- ' tion. This conference was sue- ; * from Representative Peurifoy indicates that this conference was successful and the county will now be able to get in line for compliance with the federal appropriation of $83,638/08. Tills will give me county $167,276!16, and according to the suggestion made by Mr. Murray this will relocate, grade and construct necessary bridges of concrete on quite a number of miles of road on the proposed route for the State highway. These roads will enter the county seat from three directions: One from Bamberg beginning at the <% Edisto river bridge; one from Charleston at Jacksonboro, and one from Beaufort at Yemassee.?Press and Standard. Greenville Citizen Has Pessimistic Fit At the request of a number of our \ citizens, we re-print the following clipping which we published a few weeks back: A chronic case of pessimism besieged a Greenville citizen who was asked to contribute toward a charitI able enterprise and in a fitful moment he sat down and composed a letter, which out-lampoons the writing of the most reputable satirist. The letter has been remitted to The News for publication. It is as fol lows: "Dear Sir: "1 have your letter requesting a donation for what you consider a very worthy cause. I flatter myself that I have a spirit of loyalty and generosity. I have contributed to every object that has been presented to me, but I have to decline helping your cause along for the following reasons: "I have been held up, held down, sandbagged, walked on, sat on, rolled over, flattened out, and squeezed; first by the United States government for the federal war tax, the excess profits tax, the capital stock tax, the Liberty loan bonds and the bonds of Patrimony; in the State, for State tax, the highway tax, the income tax. the auto tax, school tax, dog tax, poll tax, street tax, cat tax, and syntax, and every other organization and so^ ciety the inventive mind of man can invent to extract what you may not possess; from the society of John the Baptist, the G. A. R., the Womans ^ Relief, the Stomach relief, the wife" less, the husbandless, the childless ? the conscienceless, the navy league, the Red Cross, the Double Cross, and every other cross of all colors and bx , the children's home, the Dorcas society and the hospital. "One of my mills burned down, and the hen house and the board walk blew away, and because I will not sell all that I have to go out to beg, and steal; I have been cussed and discussed, boycotted, talked to, talked about, lied to and lied about, held up, hung up, robbed and nearly ruined, and the only reason I am clinging to life is to see what the hell is coming next. "Yours very truly." ?Greenville News. Busness and Pleasure. Blondine?Did you have a good time at the dance last night?. Brunette?Kinda. "Who was the handsome chap I saw you with just after the intermis< sion?" \ "He was a stranger in town." "Dashing, isn't he?" "Nerviest gink I ever seen." "I noticed that he had his arm rather tightly about you." "I didn't mind that so much." "What then?" "Do you know why he had me clutched that way?" "No." "Well, would you believe it, he had me that way so I couldn't escape. and all the time we were dancing he was trying to sell nie some life insurance."?Youngstown Telegram. ** 1 k TO THE >! * A I Automobile Public I v t V AA e beg to announce that we have opened a first * class garage in the Charles Ehrhardt building at J ; Ehrhardt, and we are now in position to do auto f repair work promptly and satisfactorily.
