Thursday, March 20,1919. W. M. IT. INSTITUTE. Held at Denmark Baptist Church Last Friday. , A Baptist institute of the western division of the W. M. U. of S. C., was ? * - J Thin held at DenmarK last rnua.v. lllid J division is composed of four associations, including Barnwell association. The meeting was one of the most inspirational the writer has ever at' tended. Mrs. J. R. Fizer, of Columbia, State corresponding secretary; Mrs. Geo. E. Davis, of Orangeburg, State superintendent of girls auxiliaries, and Miss Kathleen Mallory, of Baltimore, corresponding secretary of the Southern Baptist W. M. U., were present. With these three giftaA tzmmort nnthinp' but. a tfeast COUld be in store. Mrs. J. R. Fizer brought a message to the meeting in what she termed the "call of the day for women." She made it very clear that the?e is a call for every woman and girl now in this Christian land of ours, and that to accomplish the task before us we must get busy, give one-tenth of our means and onetenth of our thoughts, and the more^-e go out on the mountain and loook up, ?he more beauty and j joy in all we will find. She said much more and gave all who heard her much to meditate upon. Miss Kathleen Mallory was present in the interest of the church building loan fund. We all felt before Miss i Mallory had spoken that the message she had to bring would put her to a disadvantage to those who hadn't heard her before, for we felt that her message would be uninteresting, but she was all heart and soul for the homeless-^churches and her enthusiasm was an inspiration within itself. ,Her appeal was so earnest that hardly a person in the building but gave liberally. The Denmark W-. M. S. gave $500 to memorialize Rev. J. D. Huggins, their pastor, who died a few months ago. The Bam-j - - ~ ~ ? ? A A .. J Oerg W. IJer personality and her Vision were so appealing, that her presence was alone worth while, and those who failed to hear her missed a rare treat. Mrs. Geo. Davis gave a message about our girls. She said the most! important thing today is the Chris-j tian woman, and she laid great stress 1 on the duty and obligations our girls' I and women are under now to our | home coming soldier boys, and it is * ! her prayer that we may hold up the standard and show ourselves worthy. _ The mingling together of the ladies during the social hour was very pleasant, and the hospitality of the j Denmark ladies was unsurpassed, j The lunch was bountiful, and the en- j tire day was one sweet memory to I those who were there.?Contributed. j ^ - ? ???^?? LEVER WON'T STAND CLARK. _______ Will Support No Man Who Says Con- ' script is Synonymous to Convict. i*."' Y?;l _ lVo?lt{narf/\n 1 R "T Will , TT aOUlU^CUUf iUUl VU x v. * " j support no man who will say that a ! conscript is synonymous with a con- j let." This declaration accompanies j r'a statement issued by Representative \ Asbury F. Lever today, in which he definitely aligns himself with the; fight to prevent the selection of j Champ Clark as a minority leader of the next house. His outspoken opposition to the j present speaker is asserted by Dem-! oeratic reorganizes in the house to i he tvDical of the attitude of other' equally prominent friends of the administration who have not publicly j voiced their views. His affiliations! with the anti-Clark movement un- j doubtedly strengthens the reorgani-i zation element, as he has been one of the administration mainstays on j war legislation. Mr. Lever said: Lever's Statement. "I regard it of the utmost impor-1 tance to the future success of the Democratic party that the minority; leadership in the next congress shall j be strong, aggressive and in the fullest sympathy, not an enforced 'sym- j ' pathy, with the plans and purposes; of the president of the United States,: who for six years has been the elect-' ed spokesman and leader of his party. The leadership of the minority, in the next congress should have no axes to grind and no personal ambitions to serve. It should be such a leadership as can freely and without hesitation confer with the actual leader of the party policies. Without such harmonious relationship the situation for 1920 is impossible; ! with it, the future of the party could not be more hopeful, for it is my firm belief that the overwhelming majority of the people of the country are in line with the president in his very limit the posibility of wars in wbnderful fight to minimize to the the future. Will Support JLea^gue. "The million, three hundred thous and soldiers who have gone through the brutal murder of this war, returning to this country are as certain to give their support to the idea of a league of nations as it is certain' that the sun will rise tomorrow morning., and no man can bo selected to lead the Democrats in the next house who does not in full measure believe in this doctrine. To select a man for leader who does not believe in it would be suicide, and it is my belief that when the Democrats of the country realize what the real situation is they will demand, in terms which cannot be misunderstood, such a leadership as will give the president and his policies the fullest support. Democrats cannot allow personal relationships or sympathy to stand in the way of party success, and they are not going to do it. Personally I will support no man who will say that a conscript is synonymous with a convict." BANK STATEMENT. Statement of the condition of The Farmers & Merchants Bank, located at Ehrhardt, S. M. S. of the Baptist church of Bamberg, S. C.. a co-worker and one of our most faithful members, Mrs. Susie H. Counts. Whereas, we recognize that our all-wise Father knoweth* best, we feel that in her death our society has lost one of its most loyal members. For years she was our president and was ever ready and willing to give her aid in any work pertaining to the good of tlie church and society. Her life was useful and spent in the service of her Master. ' Therefore be it resolved. First, that we bow in humble sub - * - -Hi ~ r- ^ tt nr.
