?fje Pamberg Heralb i 1 ?* Thursday, May 16,1918. At the meeting of the Bamberg lodge of Knights of Pliythias Monday j evening a donation of $25.00 was made to the Red Cross war fund. The commencement exercises of i Converse college, Spartanburg, will < held May 31 to June 3. Miss Mildred 1 Knight, of Bamberg, is a member of < the graduating class. 1 Quite a number of Bamberg peo- 1 pie went down to Ehrhardt Sunday 1 afternoon and to Denmark Sunday 1 night to hear Capt. Pierrett, of the French army, and Hon. T. u. MCJL?eoa, of Bishopville, speak at Red Cross rallies. Mr. JoJhn H. Cope yesterday received a telegra mfrom his son, Mr. Glenn W. Cope, stating that he had safely arrived in America from a vayage to France. Mr. Cope is in the naval reserve forces. He expects to get leave of absence soon to visit his relativs here. The boy scouts of McColl, of which Mr. Bissell Beach, a former Bamberg boy is assistant scout master, sold in the recent campaign $72,000 worth of liberty bonds. Ten of the scouts won war medals. This a most enviable record, and the friends of Mr. Beach congratulate him upon the success of his organization. Mr. C. C. Rowell. of Bamberg, has been employed as policeman for the town of St. George. He took charge of the job last week, and while he has little to do so far, he seems to be wide-awake and on the alert for something to happen. He impresses the writer as being a good officer.? Dorchester, Eagle. Mr. S. A. Hand presented The ^ Ti-jf li enmo niPP Parlv xiciaiu iui H iiu ouiuv x ? ?? peaches last week, which were appreciated. Mr. Hand has nearly every kind of fruit imaginable on his premises on Main Street, and from ' the healthy, magnificent appearance 1 of the trees, Mr. Hand must he a 1 t splendid horticulturist. Prof, and Mrs. Klein will give their annual music recital at the graded school auditorium Wednesday evening, May 22. The exercises will begin promptly at 7 o'clock. An excellent programme showing the high class work done by Prof, and Mrs. Klein will be carried out. All people interested in this phase of the school work are cordially invited to be present. We are requested to announce that it is the intention of the central committees to publish the list of contributors to the Red Cross war fund, as soon as the lists can be compiled. For this reason all v local committees are asked to be careful in getting the names and i amounts of all contributors. In the j fall the names will again be publish- i ed together with the amounts pledg- i ed and the amounts paid. j ? ( Four Go to Clemson College. j 1 The following four young men, who volunteered for special training at Clemson College, left last Thursday morning for that place: J. G. Hutto, Bamberg. R. M. Rowell, Bamberg. B. R. Clayton, Ehrhardt. F. B. Goodwin, Bamberg. These young men were in the draft, but volunteered for immediate training at Clemson this summer in spec- j ial industrial work. 156 Tons for Bamberg. Mr. C. W. Rentz, distributer of nitrate of soda for Bamberg county, has received the following telegram relative to this county's allotment: Washington, D. C., May 10 C. W. Rentz, Bamberg, S. C.: ? Have allotted Bamberg county one hundred and fifty-six tons nitrate < from vessel expected arrive Charleston about May 15th. Wire shipping instructions immediately, stating whether original or even weight bags desired. Delivery may be facilitated if shipment made in original bags. Will advise you upon arrival additional vessels, and will ask further instructions. BRAND. War-time Potatoes. Mr. G. M. Sandifer has gone into raising war-time potatoes or rather some of his potatoes have gone into growing tubers on a war-time basis. He brought to The Herald office Saturday afternoon an Irish potato vine which has performed double duty. TVTr. Ooyi^ifnr T1 r? fp.WPT* than 1*1 I ^UW**V* VU. Not being satisfied with doing a large share of its ordinary duty, the plant went ahead and produced four or five small potatoes on the vine itself, that is on that part of the plant which gathers nitrogen from the air. The plant is quite a curiosity. in that it produced potatoes both above and beneath the ground. There were two such hills in Mr. Sandifer's patch. He expects to plant them next season and watch the result. Read The Herald, $1.50 a year. \ > 21 LEAVE SATURDAY. !?an:berg White Men Answer the Summons of Their Country. At a recent meeting of the State lemocratic committee the dates for :he campaign meetings in the va ious counties of the State were fixed. The meetings for State and Senatorial candidates were fixed as follows ?or Bamberg and neighboring coun:ies: SENATORIAL. Orangeburg?Tuesday, July 2. Walterboro?Thursday, July 25. Hampton?Monday, July 29. Barnwell?Tuesday, JuJIv 30. Bamberg?Wednesday, July 31. STATE. Barnwell?Tuesday, June 18. Hampton?Wednesday, June 19. Walterboro?Saturday, June 22. Bamberg?Tuesday, June 25. Orangeburg?Wednesday, Aug. 21. Denmark Takes the Lead. Denmark put on some steam this nonth, and has jumped to first place n sales of war saving stamps. Up to loon Tuesday the sales reported from Denmark for the month of May aggregated about $400 more than her nearest competitor, Bamberg. The sales eported so far this month are as 'ollows: Denmark $1,533.44 Bamberg 1,119.38 Ehrhardt 249.09 Olar 108.20 Govan 43.03 Schofield Embree Total $3,033.16 The sales by months up to date follow: December $ 192.6S January 288.97 February 475.2S March., 1,111.93 April 5,619.30 May (to 21st) 3,053.16 Total ...$10,841.54 It is to be borne in mind that these figures show the actual amount of cash paid in to the various postoffices and do not count the stamps at face value. This will serve to materially increase these figures, for only $4.16 is paid for a five-dollar stamp. The reports sent out by the war savings committee give the figures in face value of stamps, which, of course, increase the figures almost a fifth. Commends the Colored People. Olar, May 21.?The Red Cross drive is on, and I am glad to be informed how nobly the people of Bamberg county are responding to this great cause. It is interesting and gratifying to note the feeling of patriotism that now exists among our people, white and colored. The colored people deserve a great deal of credit for the way in which they are responding to this call. The Sweet Branch congregation contributed $116.75 last Sunday. Rev, Richburg is pastor of this church. Sweet Rest, the colored Baptist church at Olar, contributed $220.00. Other colored churches will be given an opportunity next Sunday. May the people continue to contribute liberally to the Red Cross. PATRIOTIC CITIZEN. ^ ! ? ? Read The Herald, $1.50 per year. + [ soMs 'j iRii CMSI WlMk V ; [ CAMjjAjftN Wwl&f.) 'Jb Tuo^m v! Are you willing to help advertise Bamberg county to other sections of the United States? Don't you know that these home-seekers don't find these facts out unless somebody tells them? To answer this purpose, to fill that mission, The Bamberg Her- J aid is going to issue a Prosperity M Proclamation edition some time in the near future.
