Bishopville, Nov. 23.?The South Carolina Methodist Conference this morning elected the following delegates to the general conference which meets next May in Atlanta: The Rev. D. M. McLeod, Dr. E. O. Watson. the Rev. Peter Stokes and the Rev. A. J.- Cauthen, Messrs. T. H. Tatum. B. G. Gregg, Charlton Durant and A. E. Goldfinch. The Rev. W. H. Hodges, of the board of managers of Epworth Orphanage, read the annual report of that institution. The orphange has had its most successful year. The conference has appointed the following commission to investigate the ornhanaee and has asked the Upper South Carolina conference to appoint a similar commission: The Rev. Messrs. D. M. McLeod and Peter Stokes, and Messrs. Thomas H. Tatum and E. C. Dennis. This commission is the result of a resolution introduced by the Rev. Peter Stokes and* amended through suggestions of E. G. Dennis. The resolution provoked considerable debate but was adopt- . ed by a large majority. The following young ministers were admitted to full connection: W. < G. Ariail, T. E. Derrick, E. K. Epps, < J. D. Williams and J. E. Cook. < A report of the Woman's Mission- < ary Society of the conference was read by the secretary, revealing the fact that the women have raised $21,- 4 000 during the year. This is the best < report that has been rendered by the < women and elicited the congratula- < tions of the bishop. The report of the committee on war work was read by Dr. E. O. Watson. This report recommended the ' raising of a fund of $5,000 for work jin the camps in this State, and the placing of a minister at Camp Jackson. The report was adopted. The next conference will meet in n^onor^hnr? McColl also extended VIMUQVW ? O' an invitation and received a flattering vote. The Board of Missions observed its anniversary last night, the Rev. Dr. Cram, missionary from Korea, was the speaker. An offering for relief work in China, was taken, amounting to $1,200. Wartime Demand for Cotton. Recent investigations in the use of cotton in war show: A 12-inch gun disposes of a half tale of cotton with every shot fired; a machine gun in operation will use u]) a bale in three minutes; in a naval tattle like the one off Jutland over 5,000 pounds a minute are consumed by each active warship; more than 20.000 bales a year are needed to provide absorbent cotton for the wounds of the injured; one change of apparel for all the troops now engaged in the war represents ! more than a million bales.
