CROOKEDNESS IN DILLON.
Grand Jury Investigates.?Treasure:
Resigns.?Warrant for Auditor.

W. C. Mclnnis, treasurer of Dillon
county, sent his resignation to Governor
Manning Friday, following an
Investigation of his office by the Dillon
county grand jury. The grand
Jury's investigation shows that there
hAfi been wholesale corruption in the
conduct of the government of Dillon
county and it is quite likely that disclosures
of a much more startling nature
may yet be made. A dispatch
of Friday from Dillon tells of corruption
there as follows:
The report of the grand jury,
which has been examining the affairs
of the Dillon county offices, made today,
involved the issuing of a bench
warrant for C. G. Bruce, county auditor,
on charges of misappropriating
county funds; the resignation of William
C. McJnnis, county treasurer,
and the recommendation that a com

petent man be appointed to succeed
him, and a reprimand for the sheriff
} - and the county attorney.
The grand jury completed its report
and it was read by the solicitor
late this afternoon in the court room
before a large number of people who
U./ were eager to hear it.
Except for a small number of clerical
errors with no intentional wrongTV

found to be all right. Some suggestions
were made as to the method of

practice, though it was advised
against it in the future.

to keep better records and to collect
the delinquent taxes and to make his

pj . The county attorney, it was found,
had not paid his taxes for 1912 and
||y:;1913, and part of the taxes of the
p / i.Hugh Price estate.of 1913, he being
py a trustee of the estate. The report
||fe states that the county attorney did

county officer to violate the law by

expained his course on the ground of

A bench warrant was issued late
this evening as a result of the findg
~ ings in the county auditor's office.
This was done upon the recommenda&
tion of the grand jury. It was found
IP" that C. G. Bruce, the auditor, had
p.v.. misappropriated to his own use the
amount of $1,405.97, and the further
sum of $3,163.81.
The master's office was found to be
all right and his books properly kept.

J. A. Dennison and Wife Found in
Exhausted Condition.

Sept. 24.?Joseph A. Dennison, former
assistant attorney of Suffolk
county, Mass., and his wife, who had
been lost for nearly four days in the
t wilderness of the northern foothills
% , ! of the White Mountains, were found
today. They had suffered from exhaustion
and lack of food and sleep.
The Dennisons had set out Wednesday
for a stroll and lost their bear'<
ings in the almost trackless woods.
For two days they had wandered in

day did they find shelter in an abandoned
logging camp, where they remained,
too tired to walk longer and
not knowing which way to turn.
Discovery of the couple was made
by Earl Gould and Scott Copp, employes
of the hotel. As a result they
are entitled to a reward of $1,500.
