Cleckley will regret to learn that she has been quite ill. The many friends of Col. J. R. Owens are glad to see him 'out again after a severe attack of grippe. The Easter holidays at the graded school began Thursday afternoon, no school being held on Friday. The play ".Me and Otis," which was given at Carlisle school recently, was presented one day last week at North by Bamberg talent. .Miss Lucile Brickie, of Cope.1 -daughter of -Mr. and .Mrs. \V. C. Cope.j it at a hosQital in Richmond, Va.f| recuperating after an operation for appendicitis. The total sales of the Bamberg county dispensaries for the month of j March were $9,478.01. The total i operating expenses of all the dis-l pensaries were $4 25.74. Mr. J. H. A. Carter and S. G. Mayfield Esq., have* been reappointed members of the county board of education, Superintendent of Education R. W. D. Rowell being the third member. There will be a play, "The Old Village School." at Hunter's Chapel school on Friday evening. April 9th, at 8 o'clock, to which the public is cordially invited. Xo admission will be charged. The good old summer time has arrived again, apparently. This weekhas been fine, and those who were successful in getting early gardens started now have a good chance of having some early vegetables. A meeting of the creditors of the Peoples Drug company was held on Monday, at which Dr. F. B. McCrackin was appointed trustee to sell the property of the company, which was adjudicated bankrupt recently. A special train was operated to , Ehrhardt over the B., E. & W. There seems to be an epidemic of la grippe in Bamberg. Nearly everybody has colds. La grippe came near demoralizing The^erald office this week, two members of the force suffering from severe attacks, however, we are all "back on the job" again. Messrs. H. Buist and A. H. Xinestein suffered slight injuries Wednesday afternoon in an auto accident near Denmark. Mr. Xinestein was driving the car, when it was thrown into a ditch. In the car also were Mrs. Buist, Mrs. Xinestein and children. Voting Contest (ioing On. The voting contest for queen of the Chautauqua festival is now going on. Several young ladies have been nominated. The first display of the I voting was given Wednesday e\^ning -- v.q v at AiaCK s JL?rug siure. luuuu ui votes will be made each afternoon and displayed at the drug store. The votes will also be thrown on the screen at the motion picture theatre. The proceeds from the sale of tickets will go toward securing a band for the Chautauqua. The voting is not to be confined to Bamberg alone, but'includes the entire county. Tickets have been placed on sale at Denmark, Ehrhardt. Olar, and * Bamberg. The young lady receiving the highest vote will be declared to be the queen of the festival, no matter what town she is from, and the young lady receiving the highest number of votes in the towns of Denmark, Olar, and Ehrhardt will be maids of honor, thus giving one maid of honor to each of these towns. Any young lady in the county may be entered. Considerable interest is being taken in the contest, which promises to be quite a success. Iteath of Little CJirl. Little Kate, the twelve-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Herndon, died at her home near the city on Monday morning, after a short illness. The remains were interred on Tuesday at Hunter's Chapel church. She was a very bright and lovable little girl, a pupil in the graded school here, and her death has caused much sorrow. Hutto-Padgett. This afternoon Miss Rebecca Hutto, daughter of Mr. W. G. Hutto, and Mr. G. C. Padgett were united in marriage at the Methodist parsonage, Rev. E.O.Watson officiating. The marriage was a quiet affair, only a few relatives and intimate friends being present. Both young people are residents of Bamberg, and have a host of friends, who extend to them their warm congratulations. Kl'WOICTH LKA(>('K .MKKTIXO. Tt ic nniffi unusual to see snow in I .. -- ? - , | April, yet Bamberg people witnessed | a fall of large flakes last Friday for more than an hour. A cold rain had been falling for the previous two days, and Friday afternoon about five o'clock, large flakes of snow fell thickly, lasting for quite a while. This fall of snow was the first that has ever been recorded by the weather bureau in this State during the month of April. The bureau's records extend only to 1887. The latest date for snow recorded was on .March 18, 1S93. Old inhabitants state a snow fell in this State on April 15, 1849. The temperature Friday afternoon. for a short while, remained at 32 degrees, rising slowly shortly after. The snow here did not re' main on the ground, melting as fast as it fell. Mr. Rizer County Chairman. .Mr. C. F. Rizer has been named as county chairman of the Belgian Relief committee for Bamberg county. Governor .Manning wrote Mr. Rizer as follows: "1 am asking you to aid in a great J work by consenting to act in your county as chairman of the Belgian Relief committee. I do not have to go into details as to the good that the Belgian relief work has done and is still doing. I think we all agree that it has been made a great human- itarian enterprise. "Mr. Bruce Walker Ravenel, the State chairman, will take great pleasure in advising with you and coop- t erating with you in all ways." ? Boatwright, of liken county, died Tuesday night at he homeiof Mr. W. D. Rhoad, in this ity, after a lingering illness. Mrs. loatwright had suffered several trokes of paralysis, and for some ime past had been confined to her ed. Although Mrs. Boatwright was . great sufferer, she bore her sufferngs with a Christian fortitude. For everal years past, she has made her lorne with her sister, Mrs. Rhoad. nd she was well known in Bamberg. Mrc Rnatwrieht is survived by one irother, Mr. Aaron Rice, and four isters, Mrs. James R. Owens, Mrs. J. S. Brooker. Mrs. Dessie Tyler, nd Mrs. W. D. Rhoad. She is also urvived by several step-children. The remains were interred this norning at 10:30 o'clock, at Sou' uide cemetery.
