LEXINGTON LIQUOR SEIZURE. Sheriff and Constables Raid Country S Club of Gilbert. Lexington, Jan. IS.?Sheriff Sim J. Miller and Chief Constable Kibler. C of the State constabulary, and three d of his men to-day made a raid on the a Lexington Country Club, of Gilbert, t: located at the crossroads near the 11 town of Gilbert, on the Columbia- h Augusta public highway. Consider- ii able whiskey and beer was seized, j a the officers bringing the capture b back to the county jail in their au- h tomobiles. The manager of the club, f Fred Craps, who, by the way, is a ru- t< ral mail carrier, wsa not present a when the seizure was made. Xo ar- ft rests were effected this morning. Some weeks ago Gov. Blease or- f< dered the officers to make a clean a sweep 6f the clubs in this county c< that were thought to be violating tl the law and the raid to-day was the t< fourth to be made by the officers in u this county. In its presentment to u the court this week, the Lexington grand jury directed the officers to close every club in the county, and a prosecute the operators. It is under- h stood that the officers have proof that t< probably every club in the county s, has been violating the law, and it is a said unless the clubs cease to oper- o ate of their own accord the authorities will proceed at once to put into a effect the recommendations of the n grand jury. t< j3 DANISH PANAMA MOSQUITOES. a Troublesome Insects No Longer ^ Found in Canal Zone. p b ' One of the most striking features of the present condition of the Pan- e ama Canal Zone is the absence of SI the mosquitoes, which at the begin- ^ ning of the work by the United States, were a great menance to n health," remarked Capt, A. B. Delanoy, of New York, to a reporter of the Washington Post. "Before the a United States took over the canal I o visited Panama and I became thor- t< oughly informed about the Panama w mosquito. On a recent trip there I went into nearly every section of the r; zone, in lowland, and upland and t1 throughout the rainy season, and I r; failed to discover a single insect. r< "I remember that on one occasion p my company sent me to Panama on v a wrecking expedition. We had on d board our vessel a pet cat which had ii been aboard the ship for a long time. s< She was just an ordinary ship cat and knew all about fleas. But when v we got to Panama the cat soon gave w evidence of being uncomfortable. We J discovered that the mosquitoes were c annoying her. Finally in desperation d the cat jumped overboard and committed suicide to get rid of the mosquitoes. She simply could not stand the Panama mosquitoes." / ? li PLAN TO WED HIS OWN BLOOD. B . g Unique Relationship Brought About a by Transfusion. c; S( Pittsburg, Jan. 16.?Physicians in this city are puzzled over a complex e: question that has arisen through the ^ giving of three pints of blood by Wil- w liam Stewart, a 20-year-old married w man, to save the life of a girl he a loves and whom he will marry, after procuring a divorce from his present C] wife, he declares. Miss Myrtle Balvering, the charmer into whose arteries Stewart's u blood was transfused, was near ^ death's door when it was decided that her blood supply must be replenish- w ed. Stewart readily agreed to the ^ request, and three pints of blood suf- a ficed and after the operation he calmly announced that he would f, marry Miss Balvering yet. p Several physicians who heard the ^ remark declared tnat siewari s as-1 e, sertion opened up a great question: b The transfusion of such a great c quantity of blood created "a blood h relationship" between Stewart and the young woman, and the law for- a bade marriages of that sort. 0 ALLEN AND SON LOSE APPEAL. r< Supreme Court Throws Out Claim of p After Discovered Evidence. a ? This shed is located st bout 20 yards from the back door al f the home. Soon after Mr. Jones left the house y( shot was heard, and neighbors and _ rembers of the family at once went ) the scene. They found Mr. Jones *ing on the floor of the house with bullet wound in his right temple. Dr. J. E. Edwards was summoned nd the body was still warm, but the hysician announced that death had een instantaneous. There were no yewitnesses to the tragedy. The corner viewed the remains, but it was jch a distinct case of suicide that he ecided that an inquest was not ecessary. One Shell Empty. His children are Mrs. Schenck, rife of a Newberry banker; A. T. Scott, white, were rrested yesterday on a charge of ir breaking and robbery and were ?nt to the county jail at Barnwell. ~ Hamie Williams, with several oth- ! rs, were caught in the act of rob- i ing a car on a through freight train j hile it was stopping for coal and } ater on the suburb of the town j bout 2 o'clock this morning. j Upon the approach of the train j rew, all the alleged robbers made \ leir escape except H.
