HICCOUGHING PROVES FATAL. After Suffering from Four-Day Attack Preacher Dies. Belmare, N. J., Nov. 19.?After having suffered from an attack of hiccoughing lasting four days, the Rev. Dr. J. W. Laughlin died today. The hiccoughing began on - Monday morning and continued until late on Thursday, when the convulsions ceased, but since then Mr. Laughlin had been slowly sinking. He had a similar attack of hiccoughing about four years ago but recovered. Mr. Laughlin was 62 years old and retired from the ministry five years ago. ? . A Remarkable Church. A freakish place- of worship is the Church of the Hoiy Trinity at Baura, in upper Austria. It is built in the form of a triangle and stands on a little hill approached by a winding ascent. If you examine it you will find that everything possible has been done to glorify and commemorate the Three in One. It has three fronts, three towers, three doors and three windows. Inside there are three altars, three organs and three sacristies. The walls are decorated with three different kinds of marble, and the church cost three hundred * and thirty-three thousand three hunf dred and thirty-three florins to build. ?Strand Magazine. Disappeared in Mid Ocean. New York, Nov. 15.?S. M. Mason, one of the best known hotel men in the South, who recently lived in Augusta, Ga., disappeared from the steamer City of Columbus shortly after 6 o'clock Sunday evening, 250 miles from Savannah and just a little south of Hatteras, on his way here. The vessel arrived to-day. One passenger stated that the missing man had been attending the Savannah automobile races. Mason was 28 years old. ^ The missing man was last seen Sunday evening, when he ordered a meal sent to his stateroom. Before Mason started to eat, he excused himself to the steward and said he was going to another room for a moment. He failed to return, and a search revealed no trace of him. Mason boarded the steamer at Savannah. Wife Pleaded for Sentence. New York, Nov. 17.?Lee P. Wood jm ward, 49 years old, a college gradur ate and a member of an old and honored Pennsylvania family, was sentenced in general sessions to-day to five years at Sing Sing and adjudged an habitual criminal. He was charged with cashing a worthless check. It was an affidavit from Woodward's former wife that caused the judge ^ to give the prisoner, who had served several prison terms, the limit for his offense. Mrs. Carrie Woodward, the man's , former, wife, said that during their married life Woodward was in constant trouble. Our son, now 21 years old, joins me in appealing to you to inflict upon him such punishment as will in your wisdom relieve us and society from the menace of his presence. Our only daughter, who died at sixteen, told me on her death bed that her father's conduct had broken her heart and filled her life j with shame and she did not care whether she lived or died." Appoints J. M. Terrell. Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 17.?Governor Brown to-night announced the appointment of former Gov. J. M. Terrell as United States senator, to succeed the late Senator A. S. Clay, who died in Atlanta last Sunday. Exf Gov. Terrell will serve as senator until the legislature meets in June to elect a senator to fill the unexpired term of Senator Clay. The new junior senator from Georgia is 49 years old and has served the State in various positions of honor. If Senator Terrell has been a life long friend of Gov. Brown. ^ It was also announced to-night that Senator Terrell will be a candidate before the legislature, or before the people if a primary is called Dy ine ouiie cumunuee. Under New Management. r Abbeville, Nov. 15.?E. C. Horton. the well known newspaper man of Williamston, was in Abbeville to-day organizing the Medium Publishing company, with a capital stock of $6,000. The company will buy the 4 Abbeville Medium and continue to publish it. Modern machinery will be installed and an up-to-date printing and job office will be operated on / business methods.
