I Thursday, October 27, 1910. For the year 1909 the tax rate in Bamberg for county purposes was mills, while in Colleton it was four mills. At the settlement last year as well as this year, there was a large surplus in the treasury for county expenses, while all the school districts had money to their credit at the close of their school year. Can Colleton make a better showing? Well, we are still waiting to hear that something is being done about about that circular letter. Now comes the announcement that The Herald of that city will install a fine new press when it moves into its new building. The owners of The Herald evidently have faith in the future of Spartan burg and their newspaper, for they ( are putting in a machine sufficient for , , a circulation of fifteen thousand. Bamberg is a better county than ; Colleton for the reason that our territory is small and we have a number j of banks and business enterprises, as ; well as a good railroad mileage, j which makes taxes low. "We now ] have seven banks in the county, a ! cotton mill, two oil mills, and mile- < age from the Seaboard, Atlantic Coast 1 Line, and Southern Railway. Man, Who Says He is Unmarried, Provides for Supposititious Heirs. The will of John B. Luther of this city, which has been probated in San Francisco, where he resided during most of his life and had his legal domicile, contains bequests to relatives in the vicinity of Fall River aggregating $109,800. The most singular part of the will is contained in the ninth clause, which reads: "I do hereby declare that I am not married and that I have no children. I have noticed, however, the facility with which sworn testimony may be procured and produced in support of the claims of alleged widows and adopted children and the frequent recurrence of such claims in recent years. Colored State Fair Meets in Columbia, November 7 to 12. The'Colored State Fair will be held in Columbia this year on the grounds of the White Fair Association, and will begin November 7 and continue to the 12th. The same reduced rates granted by the railroads to visitors to the white fair have been granted to visitors to the colored fair. The officers of the fair are: Richard Carroll, president; W. D. Chappelle, vice-president; J. H. Goodwin, superintendent; A. Robertson, secretary; T. A. Williams, treasurer. Why the Hen Needs a Head. Little four-year-old Ollie Jean, on seeing some chickens fly over a fence, told her uncle he would have to clip their wings. "Well," her uncle replied, "I won't only cut their wings, but their heads too." "Humph! you won't get any eggs then," said Ollie Jean. "Heads don't have anything to. do with eggs," said her uncle. , "Yes, they do, too; they have to cackle," Ollie Jean positively replied. ?The Delineator for November. / Slew Three Persons. Tampa, Fla., Oct. 24.?News has just been received here of a triple murder which took place some time during the storm last Monday at Chatham Bend, near Fort Myers, in which two white men and a white woman were murdered by Leslie Cox, i white man, and a negro. The dead are: Miss Ellen Smith, a man named Waller and one known as "Dutchy." The latter is said to be an escaped convict from Key West. Details of the crime are meagre. Miss Smith was visiting at the residence pf Waller, and it is believed she was killed when she attempted to interfere in a quarrel between Cox and Waller. The negro is under arrest, and claims that he was forced to kill the man known as "Dutchy." A posse now is in pursuit of Cox, who is reputed to be a desperate character. He was surrounded in a swamp near the Caxambas clam bars, but made his escape. The negro has been carried to Key West for safekeeping. Mayor Comes Clear. Spartanburg, Oct. 24.?The case against J. B. Lee, mayor of this city, arrested Saturday on the charge of speeding his automobile, was dis missed because of insufficient evidence by J. B. Ramsey, acting mayor, in police court this morning. The mayor was arrested on West Main street, at the instance of A. Perkins, at noon Saturday. Mr. Perkins would not swear that Mr. Lee was violating the speed limit, and as no other witnesses were produced, the case fell through. Mr. Lee swore that his speedometer showed a speed less than 15 miles. Child Convicts Father. Norfolk, Va., Oct. 24.?John J. Smith, who shot and killed his wife, Bridget, and their 13-year-old daughter, Rita, on September 1, last, was late to-day found guilty of first degree murder for killing the former, with electrocution as the penalty. Alcoholic insanity was the defense. The principal witness for the State was the prisoner's 7-year-old child, . William Henry Smith, the only eye-wit ness to the tragedy, who toia now his sister, standing in front to protect their mother, was shot down while begging the father not to shoot.
