Buckley, a t white man said to be a Spaniard, who c i was charged by a woman, who resides c 25 miles from Waycross, with at* tempting criminal assault on her, c was brought to Savannah from that t place to-day. The prisoner declares c that only the pleadings of a man who j ' captured him saved him from ven- t gence at the hands of a small body of t men. The alleged crime was commit- ? ted yesterday. Buckley denies any j attempt to attack the woman. t '* i < WOMAN MEETS TRAGIC END. Irs. H. R. Joseph Takes Strychnine for Morphine. Mistaking strychnine for morphine ablets, which she is in the habit of aking, Mrs. H. R. Joseph, a young voman of Galena, 111., met a tragic nd yesterday morning at 7:30 o'clock n room 17 of the City Hotel. Dr. \ V. Milkell was summoned by the woman's husband, but she died soon fter his arrival from the effects of he violent poison which she naa wallowed. R. D. Walker, coroner, and W. C. Jathcart, chief of police, held an inestigation of the affair last night n Dr. Mikell's office. H. R. Joseph, he husband of the dead woman, Mr. filler, her brother, and H. W. Miller, ler father, were submitted to a earching cross-examination, after rhich Coroner Walker and Chief 'athcart were both of the opinion hat Mrs. Joseph brought about her iwn death. No inquest will be held. Victim of Drug Habit. According to the story which the lusband told last night, his wife had ieen in the habit of taking morihine. Two weeks ago she made an ffort to conquer her craving for the [rug and had apparently succeeded. Lbout 6 o'clock Sunday morning. Jr. Joseph said his wife waked him ,nd asked for morphine. He told ter that there was none in the room. Jrs. Joseph asked her husband about he tablets in a box on the bureau .nd he informed her that they were trychnine and not morphine. She eplied that they tased exactly like aorphine tablets. His wife insisted, said Mr. Joseph, hat she must have morphine, so he ;ot out of bed about 6:30 o'clock to ,et some from a drug store, leaving lis wife by herself in the room. He was unable to purchase the drug rithout a prescription and soon reurned to his room. There he found tis wife writhing in agony and crying hat she was dying. Mr. Joseph said that he hurried nto the next room and wakened his rife's brother, Mr. Miller. Then he rent for Dr. Mikell. n spite of the fforts of the physician Mrs. Joseph lied at 7:30 o'clock. An investigation of the box in hich the strychnine was kept showed hat she had taken 15 of the tablets, t is supposed that in spite of what ler husband said Mrs. Joseph swalowed the tablets believing that they rere morphine. Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Miller, the ather and mother of the deceased, rho before her marriage was Jessie Ilizabeth Miller, were summoned rom Edgefield, where Mr. Miller was illing orders for fruit trees which he lad sold. She had been a slave to he drug habit for some time. The remains will be taken back to lalena, 111., for interment.?Columiia State. rOES BEFORE STATE COMMITTEE ongressman Patterson Appeals From Hampton Committee's Findings. Hampton, Sept. 17.?Further deelopments in the contest for the )emocratic nomination for Conressman from the 2nd Congressional [istrict took place here this afterioon, when an appeal was taken by Ir. Patterson's attorneys, from the iecision of the county executive comciittee to the State executive commitee. It will be remembered that the rotests o Congressman Patterson rere overruled and his petitions disnissed by the Hampton county execuive committee, after an all-dav hearng Thursday. There are ten grounds upon which he appeal is taken', alleging grave ;rrors of law on the part of the xecutive committee in ruling that here was no merit in the petition of dr. Patterson and in allowing the otes at Hampton, Estill and Furman :ounted. It was charged that at hese polls gross irregularities occured, fraud was perpetrated and grave trrors committed. The> attorneys for Mr. Byrnes, Col. C. F. Warren, Messrs. T. H. Gooding md George Warren, have also served lotice of appeal in behalf of Mr. Byrnes. Mr. Patterson is representtd by Gen. J. W. Moore, Messrs. W. >. Smith and C. B. Searson. Much nterest is being taken in this conest.
