Feb. 25.?Declaring ! that the Judge, jury and solicitor that tried his case will see their mistake in the day of judgment "Coot" Laser, who was convicted of attemptad rape upon the person of the pretty wife of a prominent farmer of the Dutch Fork, on the first day of last November, went to his death on the gallows to-day. It was 12.24 when Sheriff P. H. Corley commenced the reading of the death warrant. At the conclusion of this Lever was given permission to make any statement he desired. At 12.32 the drop was sprang and 11 minutes later his body was cut down. Drs. E. P. Derrick and F. O. Roberts pronounced life extinct Lever, while somewhat nervous, was composed to the last and walked #; - tA IhA MIIAM Ua , ? - OTAMBWW M ViUVt MV declared to all callers that he was t ready to die, and had no tears of the hereafter. He ate a hearty breakfast this morning, bat although a t most tempting dinner was offered t him, he refused to eat. ; This morning when The News and j&v Courier eorrespondert called to see < Lever he acknowledged his guilt and repeated the same story he told on ^ the witness stand at the trial. Tbe husband of tbe victim e of Lever's brutal attack witnessed tbe t banging He said that he was satis- c led and was glad that tbe law bad t been allowed to take its course. p A day or two ago Lever made a wEl in which be requested that tbe amount of $650, which be claimed teat be would get from tbe Society ^ of Sons and Daughters, of which he was a member, be equally divided between bis stepmother and hie wife. 1 Story of the Crime. J T)M crime for which Lever paid the death penalty on the gallows today was one of the most revolting in the annals of the county. On the first day of last November, while the husband of the victim was ploughing In a field near his home, Lever slipped np to the house and entered the yard, where the woman was hanging oat clothes, with her innocent little two-year-old child playing by her side. Lever, without warning of his Intention, grabbed her around the neck in an effort to choke her into insensibility, at the same time throwing her to the grodnd. So tightly did he grasp her throat that the blood flowed freely from the wounds Inflicted by the linger nails of the brute. Nearly every garment was torn from her body, and it was only by the most seemingly superhuman effort that Lever was prevented from accomplishing his purpose, the cries of the woman bringing her husband to her rescue. The news of the attack spread like ' * ildflre before a sweeping wind, and irithin a very few hoars the asaal luietness of the neighborhood was n a roar of excitement. Men who lad not shouldered a gun in many rears?some of them probably not lince the war?scoured the country n an eaon to get a snot at the fiendish culprit. Deputy Sheriff Miller x-as rushed to the scene in an autonobile, and with the aid of two or hree men, he succeeded in capturing >ver and landing him safely in jail >efore the mob that had gathered cnew what had happened. The offi?er arrived at the jail during the arly hours of morning, but before ic could get his man i jail several nen rode up on horseback, and the leputy had to hide his man for several hours before placing him behind he bars. So wrought up were the pople of he neighborhood that a second efort was made to get Lever. On the !nd of November a posse of from Ifty to seventy-five men drove up to he jail with the intention of taking .ever out at any. and all hazards, but he officers having heard of the probtble attack, rushed the prisoner to he penitentiary, where he was kept intil the day before he was tried. That the majesty of the law has ?en upheld is gratifying to the people of the county, and the husband if the pretty victim is being comnended on all sides for the part he uts played throughout the whole iroceedings. The sword was taken by Charles L Shorey, first lieutenant of Comany A, 30th Maine infantry, at the attle of Five Forks. One of Mr. Hudson's eyes was ractically destroyed by the shot, and le other, it is said, will be lost also. ills is particularly unfortunate in lew of the fact that Mr. Hudson, ho is a young man of about 25, has wife and three children, and his imily is entirely dependent upon his ibors for sustenance and support. Saluda, Feb. 24.?Hardy Mobley, young negro was lodged in jail here uesday, charged with assault and ittery with intent to kill. He lives ith J. E. Zeigler, near this town and KSterday morning Zeigler went to Is house and told him to go with the ther hands and cut wood. Mobley, is said, very impertinently refused > do so and began cursing Zeigler tost vilely, and rushing back into Is house, got his gun and threatened t lrfll 7?]rl?r nn tho arvnt Mr. Zeigier was unarmed and abriutely at the negro's mercy and iys he had to take the cursing and buse like a man. There was no little excitement hen it was learned how the negro id acted, but cooler counsel prevail1 and Mr. Zeigier was induced to it the law take its course and not sort to rash measures.
