CYCLONE CAUSED WRECK. Cabbage Train Ran Into a Car on the ' Main Line. The cyclone which visited Columbia Thursday morning caused the destruction of not a little property. In the city there was some damage, but ' the most considerable was the de railing of a freight train coming into the city in the early morning from ( Charleston. This accident was caused by a box 1 car being blown by the high wind from the side tracks at Royster sta- , tion. The wild car evidently rolled ! out upon the main line and remained there for two or three hours when it , was rushed into by a fast freight from Charleston traveling at the rate of 40 miles per hour. The engineer, Mr. Sullivan, did not see the obstruction on the main line and the train dashed into it. By a miracle the engineer came through without a scratch, although his engine was practically overturned. The , fireman was painfully injured, and ; the white brakeman, Brown, acting . 9? rnnriimtor. was seriously hurt. Both fireman and brakeman were thrown through the cab window. The accident occurred on the Charleston division. There is no wrecking crew on that division and the wrecking train on the main line was called into requisition. Within a few hours the debris was removed and the train moved on its way. Supt. H. A. Williams, of the Columbia division, took personal charge of the wreck and its attendant difficulties until the arrival later in the afternoon of Supt. Hungerford, of the Charleston division. There was a great exhibition of cold slaw at the wreck, for the nine cars demolished had been loaded with cabbage, and of this cargo but , little was saved.?Columbia State. The woman was led to the chair a little before 6 o'clock. The current was applied and 1,840 volts sent through her body. The current was kept on for a full minute then shut off and again applied for five seconds. Persistent life fluttered within her breast and the current was again applied for three seconds. The physicians then announced that death had ensued. See my line of nets, laces and embroideries. Good values. W. D. RHOAD. % ? .
