Dannelly, of Ehrhardt, was in the city Monday. ?Mr. Jno. H. Cope has been sick for several .days, but is out again. ?Mr. W. C. Patrick returned home Sunday from a week's stay in Columbia. ?Mrs.. Hill, of Sumter, is in the city to a visit to her daughter, Mrs. T. G. Herbert. ?Rev. C. E. Walker, of the Hunter's Chapel section, was in the city last Friday. ?Mr. Willie A. Dickinson has gone to. Charleston, where he has accepted a position. ?Messrs. Jno. E. and B. H. Carter, of the Ehrhardt section, were in the city last Friday^ ?Messrs. J. W. Barnes and W. O. Tatum, Qf the Cope section, were in the city Monday. ?Mrs. Henry Hill, of Sumter, is in the city on a visit to her sister-inlaw, Mrs. T. G. Herbert. ?Mr. H. J. Brabham, president of Bamberg Banking Co., who has been sick for several days, is out again to the delight of his very many friends. ?Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Brabham left Tuesday afternoon for Orangeburg to attend the session of the State Sunday-school convention, Mr. j Brabham being superintendent of the Methodist Sunday-school in this city. 1 | Held Up Fast Train. \ Denver, Col., Feb. 13.?Two j . masked bandits held up Denver and | Rio Grande train No. 4 at Military [ Junction, between Fort Logan and j Ijenver this morning, looting the j mail car and the registered mail, j "There is a steep grade just after, leaving the junction and as the train ; reached its crest two men sprang in- I to the glare of the headlight. One ran rapidly toward the engine j and climbed into the cab. He had a: gun in each hand and quickly had J the fireman and engineer under sub-; jection. As soon as the train was! stopped another baDdit ran to the i mail car and hammered the door. . During this time both men were shooting rapidly alongside the train | to intimidate the passengers and: train crew. It is estimated they fired at least fifty shots. The bandit in the engine cab forced the engineer and fireman to j accompany him. While one of the' bandits stood guard over the en- i gineer the other one compelled the j vfireman to enter the mail car and j point out the registered mail. Then marching the engine crew back to the engine they ordered them to proceed at full speed to Denver, threatening to shoot if not immediately obeyed. " * Result of Father's Objection to Daughter's Beau. A good joke is told on one of our over-the-river neighbors who sveral years ago had a family of good looking daughters, who were smart and good workers. They, of course grew up and the boys, as is natural, took a fancy for them and wanted to marry them, but the old gentleman for some reason (perhaps best known to himself) objected to and used every precaution to prevent any of them from marrying and especially one young fellow who was especially distasteful to the old man. As time passed on this young renow ana nis gin went on wim their courting "unbeknowing" to the old man. The old man had the house surrounded with a strong pailing fence and there was no means of ingress or egress, except through the gate, which he kept pretty well guarded both night and day. They knew they would have to run away if they got married. So one morning he awoke to find a hole in an unguarded part of the fence and his girl was gone?gone to get married against his will or wish. He was at his wit's end. None of the family claimed any knowledge of the elopement, but the old man thought differently. Turning to his other girls, whom he suspected would soon follow suit, he said: "If you want to go, go now while the way is open."? Gaffney Ledger. GIRL SURGEON'S SUCCESS. Miss Fannie Belle Walton, of Georgia, Makes Unusual Record. Eatonton, Ga., Feb. 11.?Miss Fannie Belle Walton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert J. Walton, of this city, has just graduated with | high honors from a training school I in Temple, Texas. Miss Walton won a scholarship in Belleview hospital over a large class. She took a special course in surgery. Responding to a railroad wreck call the young lady amputated an engineer's leg so skillfully that he presented her with a gold watch on his recovery. Many Negroes Arrested. Pittsburg, Feb. 12.?In a raid the police of Brownsville, Pa., arrested 150 negroes who have been loafing about the coke ovens. All were discharged at a hearing later and ordered to leave town, except six, who are being held pending an investigation of their records in Pittsburg, Cleveland and other places. According to the Brownsville authorities, most of the negroes are from Pittsburg, which place they left when the police made wholesale arrests of negroes on account of many assaults against white women.
