Supreme Court. Columbia, December 8.?An interesting habeas corpus case was argued in the supreme court to-day on behalf of E. E. Rembert, a prominent and wealthy planter of Sumter county, to secure three children from his wife, from whom he has been separated for three years, and who has been living part of the time in Charleston with relatives and the other part in Atlanta. When Mr. Rembert separated from his wife he wrote her a letter, so it is stated and said that she and the children might consider him dead so far as they were concerned and that he would give them $100 a month for Support. This stipend he was afterwards forced to keep up by a decree issued by Judge Watts. Mrs. Rembert is a strikingly pretty woman and was an interested spectator at the trial to-day. They have been married for nineteen years and have a daughter, who is at present a student in St. Mary's College in Raleigh, and also a son who is attending the Virginia Military Institute. Evidence was introduced to show that the separation was due to cruelty and dissipation on the part of Mr. Rembert, while her character was attacked by other evidence. It is said that the case was instituted by Mrs. Rembert by attorneys to secure possession of a tract of land in Sumter county originally given to Mrs. Rembert but recently deeded by Mr. Rembert to the children in trust, the trustee being Prof. A. G. Rembert of the'chair of Greek, of Wofford college. Union Meeting. Union of the Second division of tne Barnweii jsaptisi Association met with the Edisto church Saturday* Move Tiber 29th. Lynchburg, Va., December 7.? Lynchburg voted against liquor license Saturday by a majority of 195 in a total of 1,958. The election was was without disorder and bad feeling was suppressed. The only unusual feature was coffee and prayer rooms, maintained by the W. C. T. U., near each precinct; all day prayer service at one church, and marching and singing of 250 well organized children. Hyde, of San Francisco, recently convicted of conspiracy to defraud the United States of large tracts of land in Oregon and Washington, was to-day sentenced in the District court to pay a fine of $10,000 and to serve two years in the penitentiary at Moundsville, W. Va. Joost H. Schneider, of Tucson, Ariz., an employee of Hyde and convicted with him, was fined $1,000 and sentenced to one year and two months in the penitentiary. Both noted appeals to the District court of appeals and were released on bail. Merchant Kills Himself. New York, December 8.?After having failed twice to take his life, George W. Sulker, a Brooklyn provision merchant, was successful last night, shooting himself through the heart. His thirteen-year-old daughter, Irene, was sitting near him when he fired the shot. Sulker was to have been arraigned in court to-day on a charge of felonious assault on Mrs. Mary J. Sample, of Brooklyn, who was found bound and gagged in her home in September last, terribly burned with acid which had been poured on her bare flesh. Mrs. Sample said that she had been blackmailed. Her story resulted in the arrest of Sulker, who admitted that he had borrowed money from the woman but denied being implicated in the attack. Since his release on bail Sulker had been despondent. He tried to end his life by gas asphyxiation on Saturday and on Sunday repeated the attempt with a carving knife. His wife restrained him on both occasions. Dispensary System Stands. Guthrie, Okla., Dec. 7.?Oklahoma's liquor dispensary system is still ( law although the people repudiated it on November 3 by a decisive major- J ity. In the district court here to-day , Judge A. H. Hutson held that the form of ballot presented to the voters was such as to convey no intelligent idea of what was to be voted on and therefore, the only part of the propo-, 1 sition defeated at the polls was the ( provision making the dispensary law part of the constitution. ou to t hey are unmatchable values.
