Notice.?The Cotton Oil Co. will close down its plants at Bamberg and Denmark from December 21st to December 28thf on account of the holidays. The Cotton Oil Co. Mr. J. L. Atkinson, of this office, has just issued a Christmas sheet, giving a number of the merchants of Bamberg and the lines they offer. It is a well gotten up pamphlet of six pages, and the ads. are neat and attractive. They will be distributed throughout the county. The idea is a new one for Bamberg, and will result in increased business for all who advertised. Xmas specialties, a few nice suits and overcoats for men at W. D. Rhoad's. The architect for the school building was here last week with plans, but the trustees rejected them, as he had the cost of the building too high. His plans called for a building to cost about $18,000, and the trustees did did not have this much money to put into a building. The architect will attempt to draw plans to conform to the money available, and if he does not succeed another will be employed. Coming Dance. The following invitations have been issued: "The Bamberg Cotillion Club cordially invites you to attend their annual Xmas ball to be given in Folk's opera house, Friday evening, December 27th." Music is to be furnished by the First Artillery Band, of Charleston, and a supper will be served at Johnson's Hotel. The grand march will take place at 8:30 o'clock. At a regular communication of Ornan lodge, A. F. M., held last Friday evening, the Fellow Craft degree was conferred upon five candidates. D. R. M. Irvin, J. D. Thos. Black, Jr., and L. B. Fowler, Stewards^ D. W. Phillips, Tiler. Presiding Elder Smith. The new presiding elder of the Orangeburg district, Rev. C. B. Smith, paid his first official visit to the Bamberg charge last Sunday evening, and preached a strong sermon at the Methodist church. The quarterly conference was not held, as Rev. TV G. Herbert, the new pastor, had not arrived, but it will be held some time in the near future. Mr. Smith was formerly pastor of the church here, and has many warm friends in Bamberg, who were delighted to see him again. Building Notes. Mr. J. D. Copeland is adding two more rooms to his residence and making other improvements. The houses being erected by W. F. Dobey for J. A. Wyman, Esq., and Mrs. M. E. Bamberg are progressing nicely. Mr. M. J. Black will commence work on a new residence in a few days. L. L. Chartrand has the con tract. Work on The Herald's new building is going forward, and the walls are above the first story. J. S. Mitchell, who built the bank building of the Bamberg Banking Company, has the contract. Mr. 5 ones A. Williams is erecting a large barn in the rear of his residence. It will be a well finished structure. The cottage of Mr. M. E. Ayer, next to the Fitting School, on Carlisle street, is completed. Home nission Notes. The Home Mission Society held the December meeting Tuesday, the 17th, with a large attendance. During the past quarter this auxiliary has done excellent work. Nourishment has been provided 108 times; 127 Visits paid to sick and strangers; 158 garments distributed; 31 needy j assisted; something more than $139 raised for local work, besides $65 dues sent to conference treasurer. This band of workers has again pledged $100.00 towards the salary of the pastor of the Mission chapel, and will begin to raise that amount in the near future. They purpose to give an entertainment during Xmas week, Thursday, the 26th, for the benefit of this work. The entertainment will be held at the home of Mrs. Henry Bamberg, and will consist principally of music and readings. There'll be more definite news of this affair in next r\orvQY* w ccrv o .
