So far c this county is away ahead in the mat- t ter of establishing high schools under the act of the last session of the legislature. Superintendent of Education Martin says,' 'in the small county s of Bamberg three schools have al . ready qualified and there is a pros- 1 pect of a fourth before the meeting jj of the State board of education." [ It is no small thing for the smallest county in the State to be ahead on V educational matters, and it only goes to show how progressive our people \ are. I i Old Dispensary Closed Out. ^ The Richland county dispensary i board yesterday arranged with an official of the State dispensary for the purchase of the small stock remaining at the old gin mill. The amount c contracted for represents something 1 like $10,000 and the members of the 1 Richland board are congratulating j themselves upon having got rather i the best of the bargain for the stuff was invoiced at $13,000. The Richland board will place this stuff in a kind of "racket store" dis- 1 pensaiy where it will be sold off at 1 prices greatly reduced from the origi- l nal. The job lots will probably be r placed at W. D. Price's dispensary or ] at Corbett's in the rear of the new ] building of the Carolina National i bank. The county board has been puzzled J to know what disposition to make of 1 ^ the samples which have been accu- j mulating for months. The law does 1 not call for samples, but the whiskey < houses have been sending them anyway. The whole lot, with the excep- ' tion of some packages which will be put on the shelves of the regular dis* ? The price paid was $90 and Dr. Babcock for this amount got > about 45 gallons of good whiskey. | Last year the State hospital bought ] in barrel lots from the old State dis- j pensary, and this was said to be a 1 violation of the law, as the State dispensary was not allowed to retail. ] Mr. B. M. English, the secretary of ' the county board, stated last night that they had considered the legality } of the latter before selling the stuff i to the State hospital. I And so this winds up the affairs of ' the State dispensary, as was announc- i ed in The State last week. When 1 the commission took hold of the mat- ( ter last spring, it was stated that the 1 whole business might be closed out 1 in six months. All the work is now done except the report of the expert 1 accountants. It is said that Mr. Richmond, the expert in charge, has found over $20,000 in petty peculations carried on at the old G. M. I. His report will be awaited with interest.?Columbia State. When the steamer Webber, bound from Stockton, Cal., on Sunday for San Francisco, reached a point in the San Joaquin river where currents and tides meet, and a big whirlpool is formed, John Bradin, who was a passenger, had his hat blown overboard. Without even removing his coat Bradin leaped head-foremost overboard and with the ease of a champion swimmer swam through the dangerous swirl. Catching the derby in bis teeth he swam ashore. The steamer poked its nose in the bank a hundred yards lower down and waited for the passenger. As Bradin climbed aboard, dripping wet, the other passengers, who had recovered from their astonishment, began to chide him. "You're a blamed fool for risking your life just to save a $3 hat," said one. Bradin answered by turning down the inside band of his hat displaying over $2,000 in greenbacks of large denomination.
