Hammond and John C. Reed, of Atlanta; H. F. Rice, of Aiken; James A. Willis, B. T. Rice, and Robert Aldrich, of Barnwell; James F Izlar, of Orangeburg. Dr. W. T. Derieux, of the mission board of the Baptist church, will deliver an address at the Baptist . church this (Thursday) evening. All are invited. In addition to the address, several candidates for church " membership will be baptized. The Woman's Home Missions Society will hold its regular monthly meeting next Tuesday afternoon, at four o'clock, in the ladies .parlor of ' the Methodist church. Wiggins, of that town, was down last Friday afternoon, and f while here looked over Bamberg's f graded school building with a view v of getting some ideas for the erection of the building at Denmark. Jurors and witnesses at this term of court did not receive the extra Ift" pay given them by the last legislature, as the act will not be in force |||;>;: until today. Jurors will receive $2.00 . a day after today. Bacon, of Edgefield, j editor of the Edgefield Chronicle, j will give an entertainment on Friday j evening, March 22nd, at the Fitting | School chapel in this city. This entertainment was to have been given j some weeks ago, but was postponed j on account of the bad weather. The program will consist of music and original readings. Col. Bacon is an accomplished pianist and a humorist of rare ability. Kinard and family will move to Florida next week, where he will engage in the turpentine business. J. Z. Brooker has bought out the furniture and hardware store of J. E. Steadman at Denmark. See his ad. in this issue. The Herald is laboring under great disadvantages this week, and we do well to issue any paper at all. The court has our foreman on the jury this week. E. A. Hooton's dress-makef has arrived, and'he is now prepared to serve his customers promptly. You can buy your dress and have it mad? up at his store. We would be glad if some of our subscribers would remember that it takes money to run The Herald, and that we cannot furnish a paper at one dollar a year and send it on credit. The Rivers' Bridge Memorial Association will observe Friday, April 26th, as memorial day. Speakers for the occasion have fyeen invited, and their names will be announced in due time. The various township boards of assessors were in session at the court house Tuesday for the purpose of passingon tax returns of personal property. Any complaints at their action will be heard by the county board of equalization, which will meet shortly. There has never been a hanging in Bamberg county, and if Dock Nelson pays the death penalty this will be first execution since the county was formed. However, this record does not mean that our people are so law abiding. Juries and the courts have been too lenient. Fitting School Notes. Quite a large crowd assembled in the chapel last Monday night to hear the contest for the medals offered by Profs. Roberts and Guilds to the Kilgo and Sheridan societies. The occasion was a marked success; the readings and declamations were well given and. jmtertaining, and the musical part ^dded no little to the enjoyment of tfie^vening. The readings of the young ladies, the declamations of the boys, and the difficult musical selections rendered by the young ladies reflects credit, not only upon those who participate^ but also upon the work of our thdrough and efficient music and elocution teacher, who had the training of these young folk in charge. The contest proved to be an exciting one, and no one knew to whom the medals would be awarded until the fortunate one was called forward by the chairmen of the committee of judges. Last week we were once again'favored with a visit from Mr. C. B. Daniels, student secretary of the Y. M. C. A. for North and South Carolina. Mr. Daniels made friends here on his first visit last fall and we were glad to see him back. Prof, and Mrs. Hogan made a weekend trip to Congaree, Prof. Hogan's home. They report a delightful trip. The officers elected at a meeting of the Kilgo Literary society last Saturday night for the next term were as follows: Prof. W. D. Roberts, president; John Huffman, vice-president; Joseph Murray, secretary; R. G. Addison, treasurer; Rhett Ott, first critic; Eugene Stokes, second critic; Ernest mers, censor morum; Isaac Anderson, floor monitor. Marshals: Eugene Ackerman, William Fender. Train Smashed Wagon. Branchvillf, Mar. 9.- The Southern's Blackville-Kingville train, due here at 8:30 a. m., ran over and killed two fine mules and demolished the wagon belonging to Mr. D. L. Rhoad here this morning.
