Good crowds were in town last week, and our merchants seemed to do a good Christmas business. This will positively be the last issue of The Herald?for 1906. But we hope to Visit you fifty-two times during 1907. The statement of Peoples Bank published in this issue shows that institution to be doing a good business and pros pering. The cotton mill and oil mill shut down several days this week in order that the employees might enjoy the Christmas holidays. If you have not tried "Ben Hur" flour you will be "tickled to death" when you do. Planters Mercantile Co. The roof of Mrs. G P. Bamberg's residence caught fire last Monday afternoon, but it was put out before much damage was done. The graded school and Fitting School suspended exercises last Friday for the holidays. The sessions will be resumed next Wednesday. A.t a hot supper held on the place of Mr. W. E. Spann several negroes participated in the use of firearms, but no one was seriously hurt. Christmas passed off very quietly in Bamberg, There was little disorderly conduct. The banks and most of the business houses closed Tuesday and WedMAC/lotr i". 1SWVIOJ. HOOVER. ' *'V :> * & *"* , DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. i Home of Clerk of Court Free Burned I Tuesday Morning. Clerk of Court C. B. Free and his family spent a Christmas not at all enjoyable. About two o'clock Tuesday morning his dwelling, situated about a mile above town, and all its contents was entirely destroyed by fire, the family barely escaped with their lives. It is not known how the fire originated, as the roof was falling in when it was discovered, and the inmates, including several small children, had to flee from the flames r?lad nnlv in their niedit clothes. The night was bitter cold, and they had to come to town, a mile or more, for refuge with relatives and friends. Mr. Free and his wife were both away, he leaving on the 8 o'clock train the night before to spend Christmas day with her relatives at Kline, Barnwell county. His son, Mr. W. E. Free, and some of the younger children were the only ones at home. Not a thing was saved?the loss was complete. The smoke-house and chicken-house were also burned, burning a number of chickens, and also a lot of meat. Mr. Free butchered his finest hogs only a few days before. His gin-house also caught fire, but was put without much damage. Mr. L. N. Bellinger was making his home with Mr. Free for the present and he lost all his turniture, surveying tools, eto., as well as all his records of work done for the past forty years. Mr. Bellinger was also away, he having gone to visit relatives in Columbia a few days ago. Mr. Free's loss is heavy. He had only $1,000 insurance on his house, and nothing on his furniture. He ! is a good business man, and was un- J der the impression that his furniture ] was insured for $1,000 as well, but J the policy had expired, and he < thought it had been renewed. Such < proved not to be the case, however. < In addition to the loss of household J goods, piano, etc., there was destroy- J ed a quantity of old family silver " and other possessions which cannot ( be valued in the money sense. Mr. Free has been a great sufferer ] by fire. A number of years ago his [ dwelling was burned, mid about two years ago he lost his lafge barn and 1 some stock. His numerous friends j sympathize with him in his loss, but we trust that out of the fire evil, the j good of having him move to town and really become one of us, will come. We understand he thinks of buying property in town and moving , here, and we sincerely trust the report is true. No man would be | more thoroughly welcomed as a citizen of this city than "Charlie" Free. Presiding Elder's Visit. The new presiding elder of the Orangeburg district, Rev. Jas. W. t Kilgo, paid his first official visit to the Bamberg Methodist church last Sunday. He preached at both the morning and evening services, deliv- ( ering strong, practical sermons on . both occasions, and our people generally were simply delighted with him. Mr. Kilgo is not only an awe < preacher but a man of charming per- ? sonality. His zeal for the cause of c Christ permeates his whole walk and conversation and one cannot help t being strengthened by coming in I contact with such a man. \ The first quarterly conference for t the year was held immediately after J the morning service, and the reports a made were very good indeed. Annual fleeting of Stockholders. The annual meeting of stockholders of Bamberg Banking Company was held at the bank office last Thursday. The report of the officers for the business of the past year showed a most satisfactory condition of affairs, and the usual annual dividend was declared. This is one of the oldest banking institutions in the State, and, under the presidency of Mr .T_ Brabham, it has beenverv successful. The handsome new twostory bank building, situated in the center of the business district, is almost completed, and it will be oc- t cupied. about the first of February. f The old board of directors was re- j elected as follows: H. J. Brabham, t Dr. J. B. Black, J. D. Copeland, Sr., E. C. Hays, W. D. Rhoad, Jno. H. t Cope and Henry F. Bamberg. The same officers were re-elected: H. J. j Brabham, president: Jno. H. Cope, vice-president. D. F. Hooton, cashier; M. W. Brabham, assistant cashier; Miss Myra Hooton, book-keeper. .
