Moye Dickinson, manager and treasurer of the Cotton Oil Co., returned last Saturday from Atlanta, where he spent the week attending the meeting of the Cotton Seed Crushers' Association. ?Among the old soldiers from this county who attended the Confederate reunion in Columbia last week were L. N. Bellinger and J. B. Hunter, of Bamberg; M. O. Kinard and J. C.Copeland, of Ehrhardt. ?Rev. M. B. Kelly and Mr. Geo. C. Hodges, of Greenwood, spent several days here last week On a visit to Rev. Peter Stokes, returning to Greenwood last Friday. They enjoyed several fish dinners at the Edisto. ?Mr. H. W. Jobuson is at Salisbury, N. C., where his wife is in the hospital. She has been operated on, and their many friends will be glad to know that she is getting along nicely. It is hoped that her health will be fully restored. TRAIN ALMOST HITS AERONAUT Parachute Carries Balloonist Into Path o! Approaching Illinois Centra] Freight ??? v Battling with adverse currents of air which were blowing him directly in front of an Illinois Central express train as he descended 5,000 feet from a balloon to the earth in a flimsy parachute, William Mattery, a French aeronaut who had ascended from Chicago, fought for his life while 5,000 people watched the struggle. The engineer of the train saw the aeronaut less* than 200 feet in the air above him descending directly before his train. He applied the air brakes, but knew that unless Mattery conquered the air currents he was powerless to save him from death. He swung himself back and forth on his little trapeze, kicked and made every effort possible to swerve his parachute away from the path of the train. Suddenly the parachute sank quickly to the ground just as the train rushed by. Blake was plowing in the field and his father was at work in the same field a few hundred yards away. | A heavy cloud came up, but as no rain was falling the men continued to work. A bolt of lightning struck thi negro and his mule, killing them both instantly. I Blake's father heard the report and looked in the direction of his son in time to see the mule fall. He hurried to the spot and found that both had been killed. His son's clothing was on fire when he reached him, but there was no scar or burn on he mule by which one could have told bat it had been struck. Coroner Warner eld an inquest over the body this mornng and a verd.ct was found in accord.iice with the above facts. The local school will close a very successul year under the superintendency of Prof. C. V. Neuffer on June 4. Hon. Mendel L.
