"Counsels and Ideals" is the title of Dr. William Osier's new book, a copy of which was recently received by his Mend, Dr. Henry M. Hurd of Johns Hopkins university, says a Baltimore * v-ly- special dispatch to die New York Times. Upon the question of age limit i;:>" of man's utility the physician whose views, on this subject provoked so much discussion last winter says in his ^ book: '} ; "When a man norVax nor honey can - Kfiln* hAmA ho ahnnkf in tho interests >: , . of an institution, be dissolved from the hive to give more laborers room. I ,- / would urge the clinical physician as he travel* farther from the east to look , well to his companions to see that they . are not of his own age and generation. Hemust walk with the 'boys,* else he JV ' is irrevocably lost I would not have him a basil plant to feed on the brains ;S; of the bright young men who follow the great wheel up hill, but to keep his mind receptive, plastic and impressionv able he must travel with the men who i are doing the work of the world, the ,> men between the ages of twenty-five and forty." * ' V Here is some of his advice to students: Throw away, in the first place, all 1|p ' ambition, beyond that of doing the jpg day*8 work well. As to the method of work, I have a single bit of advice: Take no thought for the morrow; live neither in the past nor the future, ,but let each day's work absorb your entire energies." * On the way men die the doctor writes: . "As a rule man dies as he has lived, f| uninfluenced, practically, by thought of a future Ufa I hare careful records of aboot 600 deathbeds, studied particularly with reference to the modes of '' "* death and the sensations of the dying. & Ninety suffered bodily pain and distress Of some sort or another, eleven r% showed mental apprehension, two positive terror, one expressed spiritual exaltation ana. one bitter remorse. The great majority gave no sign one way or the other. Like their birth, their death was a sleep and a forgetting. The preacher was right: In this matter man hath no pre-eminence over the beast v*'. As one dleth, so dieth the other." x ' * The book was compiled by Dr. Camac of Philadelphia under supervision of Dr. Osier and comprises extracts from all the letter's writings, with adr ditlo&8. . HIGHER CAR FARES. v Ezperfa PrcOetloa, Who Tells of Increased Coet of Electric Lines. Warren S. Hall, general manager of the Lehigh Yalley Transit company, formerly of die Public Service Corporation of New Jersey, predicts that -?j III I. 4?^1 OOO UiCTV win OB tut wxeasv ui uur ley teres throughout the United States, says a special dispatch from Allentown, Pa-, to the New York Times. He says that It is bound to come in great , metropolitan centers as well as on suburban and long cross country lines. Mr. Hall bases this conclusion on the increased cost of all materials for electric railways. He said recently: Trolley men are aghast at the price Of copper. It has gone up to 20 cents a pound, and I would not be surprised if it were soon to cost 25 cents. Fif'? . teen and even ten years ago first class ties could be bought for 18 cents apiece. Host of the roads built ten to fifteen years ago are being reconstructed, and the price of first class ties is 60 to 75 cents. "Poles for the overhead construction have gone up In the same ratio. Rails which formerly cost $18 to $20 a ton now cost as high as $38 a ton. The prices on engines and boilers have advanced 9S per cent, and fuel is also higher." t *, - 2 ? ? 2 U fee vV c ? D., a well known and highly regarded Baptist minister, died at his home near Aiken at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Dr. Cuthbert was about 70 years of age and was k wn all over this section, having preached often in Augusta and served as pastor in Charleston for some years. He was pastor of the Aiken Baptist church for over 20 years. His brother was a distinguished preacher in Washington, D.C. Dr. Cuthbert was stricken with grip last year and shortly afterwards he suffered a severe attack of tyj hoid. His fine constitution enabled him to pull through both of these attacks. A few weeks ago he was stricken with a stomach trouble and later his heart became affected. He was thought to be recovering but today when a member of his household went to call him to dinner he was found dead in his chair. Dr. Cuthbert is survived by his wife. No announcements have been made as to funeral arrangements but it is probable that the interment will take place here tomorrow afternoon. ?Miss Birdie Gill left yesterday for a ' - cr ? Qk. .a!
