Court recently f a negro on the witness stand was'be- t ing questioned about a sick horse by a i lawyer, says the Kansas City Times. 1 "What was the matter with the horse ?" t asked the lawyer. 5 "He was ailin\" replied the witness. ; :y "Yes, I know," said the questioner, "but j < what was the matter?" a "He was jes* ailin'." e "But what was wrong? With what dis- o jjgV- ease was he suffering?" ? "Jes ailin'," persisted the negro. The p lawyer was quiet a moment. Then he had a bright idea. He would try to get at the Z horse's symptoms. J "Well, how do you know he was ail- I ing ?" he asked. w 'Cause he died," replied the witness. Tears, Idle Tears. > Mrs. T. DeWitt Talmage, at a tea which she gave in Washington in Mrs. Fairhank's honor, said of a little girl: "She is a remarkable little girl. Her mind is so original that I think she will | grow np to be a genius. The other after- | noon, awakening from her nap, she called I - her mother to her. I "Mamma,' she said, 'what was I crying ' about before I went to sleep ?' i Her mother smiled. "'You were crying, my dear,' she an- \ swered, 'because I wouldn't let you have J your father's watch to play with.' j '"Oh, yes; I remember now!' The little 1 girl's face contorted and she burst out 8 again. { " Boo-hoo! Boo, boo-boo-boo! Boo- i hoo!"' j "i-- t 1 lit? He did all his courting before marriage He never had time to go anywhere with lis wife. He doled out money to his wife as if to i beggar. He looked down upon his wife as an nferior being. He never took time to get acquainted with his family. He thought of his wife only for what ihe could bring to him. He never dreamed that there were two ddes to marriage. He never dreamed that a wife needs iraise or compliments. He had one set of manners for home ind another for society. He paid no attention to his personal appearance after marriage. He thought his wife should spend all ler time doing housework. He married an ideal, and was disapminted to find it had flaws. He treated his wife as he would not p lave dared to treat another woman.
