Thursday, Sep. 21,1905 If Senator Tillman is not trying tc revive factional feeling in this State, then we must confess we don't known what be is after. * * This newspaper does not favor prohibition, but it makes ns very [tired when these dispensary papers have so much to say about blind tigers in Gaffney and other places which have no dispensary. Suppose a few men are arrested for selling liquor in dry towns, what of that? There are laws against stealing, murder, and a number of other crimes, yet they are violated every day. Because whiskey is sold illegally is no argument against prohibition, for no one expects to see any - - ? 1? ?J Jaw on toe statute uou&s m?uu muware. The very fact that there are laws providing punishment for such acts is conclusive proof that people will break them. Nobody ever heard of a law which was not broken. * * . * Senator Tillman is having a good deal L x to say in his speeches as to Governoi Heyward's duty. Things are getting too hot for the Senator, and he is trying to turn attention to Heyward. This is an old trick of Tillman's, but it will not work. The governor has nothing to do with the dispensary investigation, and it is no part of his business to dip in. But if Tillman can get public attention turned from him to what he is pleased to call Heyward's lack of nerve, it would be exactly what he is after, for he wants to lay the blame on the governor. Tillman said he would make public in his Marion speech the facts upon which Heyward should remove the board, but of course he didn't do it. And he will not, either. The Worm That Works. A small girl who had just begun to have "nature study" in school was telling hei *-1 cnma of tho thinfrc cVic HlUlliCl ICWUtlT OVU4V v? wv had learned. Her mother listened with t.~ interest and finally asked: "Can yon tell me the name of the pooi worm mamma gets her silk dresses from?" The child pondered deeply and then said aVc' ' suddenly: "Oh, I know! From papa!" Cot Oat and Pot in Tonr Bible. The information given below was compiled by the Christian "World. We would suggest that you cut out and paste in your Bible. You will find it a ready reference which to refresh your minds concerning things you so often need in reading your Bible: A day's journey was about twenty-three Z\ and one-fifth miles. A Sabbath day's journey was an English mile. A cubit was nearly twenty-one inches. A hand'Sjbreadth is equal to three and five eighths inches. A finger's breadth is equal to one inch. A mite was less than a quarter of a M': ' cent. , A gerah was one cent. An ephah. or bath, contained seven gallons and five pints. A hin was a gallon and two pints. An omer was six pints. Murder and Lynching. Honea Path, Sept. 17.?About three jniles below here in Abbeville county this afternoon just before sunset Sam and Jim Moore, two white men, got into a difficulty with Allen Pendleton and another negro. A fight followed in which Jim Moore was cut and killed by Pendleton. Pendleton escaped and was captured by a crowd about a half mile below here, He was carried back to the scene of the Jailing and shot by about a dozen men. Messrs. C. E. Harper, John F. Monroe and Magistrate Ashley arrived on the scene and tried to prevent the lynching The negro was kept till 10.25 o'clock before he was lynched. Most of the parties engaged in the lynching were recognized "bv a considerable number who were pres> ent and not engaged in the affair. The crowd was dispersed and thougt the negroes are greatly excited no furthei ^ Lt. r irouuie is icaicu. . * The Hughes Tragedy. Memories of the frightful tragedy ai Trenton, Edgefield county, about a yeai ago, when the entire family of Mr. B. B lost their lives in the destruction of thei; home by fire?a mystery which has neve: been solved, despite the fact that the idei of murder and suicide on the part of Mr Hughes was vigorously advanced?ii brought back to memory by a case on th< docket of the county court*to be tried a the fall term. The case in question is tha of Georgia Asbill against the administrators of the Hughes estate, Messrs. S. T Hughes and G. W. Wise. The complaint in the suit alleges tha Mr. Hughes occupied the house under i lease or contract, one of the conditions be ing that the residence at the terminationo the lease was to be returned to the owne in as good condition as when rented; tha Mr. Hughes breached the contract, havinj himself burnt the house, his act havinj caused the total destruction of the house Judgment against his estate is demande to the amount of its value.?Johnstoi News. Mr. A. C. Griffin has bought out th livery business of Mr. M. M. Smoak. Hub Eians Defiant. Columbia, Sept. 12.?Chairman H. H. Evans and Director L. W. Boykin, of the State dispensary board, arrived today for the monthly meeting of the board, but : each firmly and emphatically declined to issue any sort of statement for publica. tion, and said that no statement would be \ issued from them. They said if Director Towill, who is not here, issues a state - ment, it will be in his own behalf. [ Mr. Evans is in a defiant mood, bat ber yond giving expression to his contempt . for the newspapers, he would not talk. I However, a friend quotes him as bidding . defiance to Senator Tillman and all t others who have insinuated against his honesty. t "Ben Tillman nor Frazer Lyon nor T anybody else had better not say that Hub , Evans stole anything," he is quoted as replying with an oath to the suggestion from Senator Tilliman that the board : resign. "I will not only not resign, but I am going to Tun for re-election, and I will be re-elected. I will show these bul; lies a thing or two." f INSURANCE ... I WRITE---FIRE IXSURAXCE LIFE IXSURAXCE.
