It shows that the total expenses fertile past year were only a little over twelve thousand dollars, and this we re.. gard as being exceptionally low. Karesh at Olar is giving up business and the cost sale is going on every day. . Bamberg is regarded as one of the very best towns in the lower part of the State. Ti- . There is no town except Orangeburg rv; which can begin to compare with Bam- ; pfeLv.-' berg in the amount of business done, the number of enterprises, and in a general gg;>v industrial way. Yet real estate is lower , here than in any town we know of in this ; section. In Branchville,Blackville, Barnwell, Allendale, and such towns, real estate is much higher than in Bamberg. But it will not be so always. Prices are going higher all the time. Property here ; commanas higer prices than it did a year Vo. 1 ago, and we look for a still farther in crease in values. Now is the time to invest, for Bamberg real estate will never . be as cheap again as it is now. 311-. ' > ' Mr. Geo. A. Jennings has rented the residence of Mr. H. W7 Johnson. Rev. J. B. Holly has purchased the twostory brick store on Main street, next to The Herald office. The Woman's Home Missionary Society will meet with Mrs. E. 0. Kirsch at 3:30 o'clock next Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Joseph McCormack brought us some large turnips last week. One weighed four pounds and the other 4? pounds. Can some one produce larger ones ? In some counties of the State the farm? ^ At. 4.2-^ ? ers are going aooui ioe quesuuu ui reducing the cotton acreage in earnest. The movement promises to be general. Mr. W. A. Klauber has purchased the Hooton residence on Railroad Avenue, which had lately been occupied by Mr. M. C. Sandifer. Mr. Sandifer is erecting a dwelling in the South-eastern part or town, near Mrs. J. E. Varn's. There will be little of interest that our legislative delegation will do in regard to county affairs. Few appointments are to be made, and the tax levy will no doubt be the same as last year. Township boards of assessors will have to be appointed, however. Mr. W. C. Patrick has given up his Sosition at Klauber's,,aud will go to [aeon, Ga., next week. He will take a place as traveling salesman for the Toledo computing scales, and will travel Georgia territory. He will be associated with Mr. H. 8. Dowling, who is general agent for the State of Georgia. John ThomDson. the famous enter tainer, will give an entertainment at the Dpera house here this (Thursdav) evening, January 12th, consisting or stories, jongs, music, etc. Seats are now on sale it Hoffman's, and the price of admission s low. A meeting of the stockholders of the new building and loan association was * held in the town hall last Monday after- 0J noon. \ . p Jno. R. Bellinger, Esq., presided over P1 the meeting and Mr. W. Paul Riley acted ^ as secretary. This was merely a meeting F necessary to take steps for procuring a. ^ charter and organizing. A committee consisting of Jno. R. Bellinger, Dr. Geo. F. Hair, and G. Frank ^ Bamberg was elected, to procure a char- UI ter and arrange for opening the books of P1 suDscnpuon. The committe to prepare by-laws consists of Jno. R. Bellinger, Jno. H. Cope, and H. M. Graham. _ At the time of the meeting there had been 350 shares subscribed for, and it is likely that the total number will exceed 400.
