Thursday, Sept. 1, 1904 ' Possibly if that man over in Florence county had kept his nose out of other people's business he wouldn't have gotten it broken. The agony is ended for a number of the ' candidates. The more we see of the primary the more we are convinced that it 1 is not the most satisfactory plan of nominating candidates. And the more we become familiar with South Carolina politics, the more are we disgusted. Honestly we don't see how the county 1 weekly newspapers can do as much free ( work as they do and live. If a merchant attempted to give away so many goods as 1 * the printers do space, he'd be broke in less 1 .than a year. The fact is, most of the T country editors don't make much of a * "Our live contemporary, the Carolina Spartan, is now using linotype matter. 1 The new arrangement makes it a better 1 newspaper. It is ably edited by Capt. 1 Charles Petty, a journalistic veteran, and t under the able management of Evan J. ILide, the proprietor, is snowing great improvement. Mr. Lide is a fine young fel- c low, and certainly deserves a large meas- 1 ure of success. 3 Just as we expected and as we predict- ( ed last week! Bennett, the Hampton coun- c ty murderer, was allowed to escape. The 1 officers had him in their charge and then * released him. It is the most astonishing ^ piece of business that we have everheard - of. The legislature should restore the removal power to the governor. Condi- ( tions will never be better so long as officers of the law practically aid and abet crime and allow murderers to escape the ? penalty of their deeds. { The Result in the State. The election returns for the State are * not at all complete at :he time of this 1 writing (Wednesday morning), but 34,808 votes being accounted for in the race for 1 railroad commissioner, which is the only contest for a State office. Mobley leads 1 with 8,828 votes, Earle is second with 7,- 3 979, Garris next with 6,486, Cansler 5,310, Evans 4,430, Gignillat 1,775. At this writ* ing it cannot be said with any degree of certainty who will be in the second race ( with Mobley. Garris may get in, but it j looks now like the second race will be y - between Mobley and Earle. Our opinion, 4 I However, is mai me secuuu raue wm uc | between Mobley and Garris, for we be-1 j lieve Garris will overtake Earle's lead. < In the race for congress in the second i district Mayfield leads with 4,359 votes, J Patterson second with 4,349, and Williams j I 2,017. Second race between Mayfield and Patterson is certain, although Mayfield will likely have a good lead when all the returns are in. Patterson leads in Aiken s Barnwell and Beaufort. Mayfield leads i in Bamberg, Hampton and Saluda. t In the third district Wyatt Aiken de- ^ feated I. H. McCalla, the vote being 7,903 ^ to 4,505. ? -In the fifth district D. E. Finley befeats r T. Yancey Williams, the vote being 7,171 j. to 4,050. s v In the sixth district J. W. Ragsdale is leading with 3,810 votes, J. E. Ellerbe next 1 with 3,324, James Norton next with 2,841 and Dargan 2,143. Second race will prob!& ably be between Ellerbe and Ragsdale. g J. Elmore Martin is re-elected sheriff r g; -of Charleston county, defeating John P. J Grace, although the race was close. ' In Barnwell Geo. H. Bates is probably a elected Senator, the vote heard from giv- t ing Bates 805 and Robert Aldrich 692; W. ^ Gilmore Simms is probably re-elected ^ clerk of court, although the vote is close, E . Simms having 693 and Duncan 678; Creech and Moore will run over for sheriff; H. L. 3 O'Bannon is re-elected Master; Armstrong c is probably elected County Treasurer, defeating Patterson. James E. Davis is re-elected Solicitor j K??" by a large majority. a M His Wedding Present. c Congressman Perkins was in the office * of a friend, a justice of the peace, when a e couple came in to be married, says the a Christian Register. After the ceremony s the justice accepted a modest fee and ^ anded the bride an umbrella as she went t out. Mr. Perkins looked on gravely, and asked: "Do you always do that, Charles?" "Do what? Marry them? Oh, yes." "No, I mean bestow a present on the i ks. bride." I "A present? Why, wasn't that her umbrella?" gasped the alderman. "No, it was mine," replied the congress- * man, sadly. t ? - T Where She Evened Up. 8Er" Husband?"I wish you wouldn't make ( so many grammatical errors, my dear." 1 Wife?"What's the matter with 'em? g Ain't they as good as your mother used to s make?"?Chicago Daily News. I feT* Was on Stilts. Charles J. Glidden, who is making a ;our of the world in his automobile, reach- ; ed Boston recently, says the Baltimore Herald. To a number of reporters he related his experiences, and among other things he said: "In Wales I put up one night at a remote tavern where an American lay ill. "I called on the American and we had a long talk together. He was not very ill a *vi nr r\ f CAmn inroli/lc Lii, UUl, ailCi tut ui cvuiv/iuiunvt^ be growled and grumbled a good deal. "'By Jove!' lie said suddenly, 'I smell a chicken cooking. I am going to have some chicken broth.' "So he ordered the broth, and in due time it was brought to him. The look c f complaint vanished from his eyes on its arrival. For the first time, dipping his spoon in the liquid, he smiled. "But he had no sooner tasted the broth than he emitted a dreadful oath. "'Weak,'Jhe said, 'weaker than water.' " 'I suppose,' I murmured sympathetically, 'that they just let a chicken wade through it.' "'Well, if they did,' growled the sick man, 'the chicken was on stilts.'" Escaping Convict Shot. Greenwood, Aug. 30.?Frank Dial, a poung negro, escaped from the chain-gang ind was shot this afternon by Police Oficer Goldsmith. Physicians says he is < langerously wounded. The officer ordered the negro to halt, thereupon Dial ran. The officer, after >ursuing him a considerable distance and 1 rainly ordering him to halt, fired on him < it a distance of 50 feel. The negro fell ] tnd was taken to his home in the patrol < i vagon. Dr. Black says the bullet entered just ] eft of the backbone, cutting a rib and 1 odging in the abdomen. The bullet has i lot been extracted and the physician says here is little hope of his recovery. WHAT'S IN A NAME? 1 Everything is in the name when it i :omes to Witch Hazel Salve. E. C. Do- < iVitt & Co., of Chicago, discovered some . rears ago how to make salve from witch 1 lazel that is a specific for piles. It was lecessary for this epithet to be withdrawn, , md, after some colloquy, Mr. Johnson >aid: "I withdraw the language, Mr. Speaker, Dut I insist that the gentleman from Illinois is out of order." "How am I out of order?" yelled the nan from Illinois. "Probably a veterinary surgeon could :ell you," hotly retorted Johnson, thereby 1 repeating the original insult, but in par- 1 iamentary language. And then, as no one seemed to un derstand his allusion, he went on: "The man I refer to stood in the middh of a lonely road, holding by its massivi crooked horns a huge ram. " 'Will you oblige me,' he said to a pass iug youth, 'by holding this ram till ] open.the gate behind me? It is fastenec on the inside, and I find I must climb ove: it.'
