The press of the State is putting 0- forth its best efforts in endeavoring to | create a sentiment of obedience to law, p Twit nothing which all the editors may Bay can have much effect so long as the |/ officers of the law fail in their duty. fr: John Bell Towill, a member of the j|- State board of control, says hqjs bitterly opposed to the scheme of selling whiskey through grocery stores. He wants to see j'V the consumption of whiskey decreased !T;. instead of increased. He is exactly right. 1. The scheme is simply one to increase the p. sale of liquor, and we feel sure it will never be adopted. tV. The Georgia people have the reputation e of doing things up brown, but on Tuesday > at Statesboro the fire was too hot. Seri|& iously, though, wasn't it a great farce to ft have military companies protecting prisg?; oners with unloaded guns? "We despise bvnocrisv. The authorities simply abetted IH the lynching under the guise of protecting p the condemned negroes. The Summerville News is of the opin. ion that no man who is a candidate for * / office should serve as a member of the | . county Democratic executive committee. Our views fully coincide with this, but jgv we go further. No man who is a candip date should be a member of either the State 1J or county committee. The machinery of V the party should not be in the hands of officeholders. Judge Parker said one good thing in Ihis speech of acceptance of the Democrat: ic nomination for president, and that was | he would not again be a candidate nor ^ accept the nomination for president. This is good doctrine, and ought to apply to v all offices from president down. There should be a law passed making a person ineligible to any office after one term, except judges, and they should be elected . for life. b The Columbia State says: "It will be Bpv . unfortunate for Candidate Jiooiey n u 15 Bp;r' proved that the attempt has been made to ??; enlist all dispensers in his behalf." Certain pi it is that the attempt has been made to ||f- enlist some dispensers in behaif of Mr. .Mobley, a candidate for railroad commisaioner, and onr information leads ns to ap; believe that this attempt was not confined Bp to a few persons, but that dispensers all over the State were recepients of that letBfe ter sent out from the State dispensary in J Columbia. The positive information that ggp~ these letters were sent to various parts of State or to all dispensers and dispen- ' sary officials could only be ascertained by ; ' a great deal of trouble which we have not Eh. the time for. But they were sent to Green- , Kzf.' ville and Bamberg coufities, and the nat nral inference is that they were mailed Bp:, all over the State. It was most certainly ipr an attempt to use the influence of the dis||||: pensary in politics, and we doubt not that it will prove rather "unfortunate for Can|?L didate Mobley," as we believe the voters . jig will rebuke such an attempt by their ballots on the 30th instant. Pertinent Paragraphs. The Parker and Davis ratification meetly-' ing, which Charleston is trying to have jfv pulled off there, might be a good thing? for Charleston. Hp?., At a meeting of negro club women in Massachusetts last week, Senator Tilldenounced as beincr "un-Ameri vV~, \ can." How's that for originality ? Hlk President Roosevelt will in all probability have little to say about the battle of Santiago controversy, which has been reilk';'' opened by Admiral Schley. He is not looking for an "extra" which has "trouble" as a catch line. According to the Augusta Herald, "Travel will broaden a man, but so will a gpv padded coat," and also an uncoatcd padgP Sle. That member of the dispensary board, who devised the plan for the sale of liquor in grocerv stores, has by far the most fertile brain developed in South Carolina in quite a number of years. Russia's soliloquy: To-go or not To-go: that is the question; whether 'tis better to run from the shot and shell of out- 1 rageous fortune, or to take arms against the sea of troubles and by opposing end 1 gk them. "Do you think the modern girl is beu% efited by an athletic training ?'y "Yes," answered Miss Cayenne. "It J enables her to get in and out of the ham-} mock without breaking her neck." j F <*Sf A Grasping Minister. "Have you a good minister ?" asked a summer visitor of a rural resident in New England. "Waal, he would be if he w&rn't quite so graspinV "How does he show that he is grasping?" "Waal, last winter when we gave him a donation party an' carried him a lot o' veg'tables an' other truck an ;<4U in money, he warn't willin' that the money should go on his salary." . "But I suppose he doesn't get a very large salary." "Waal, purty fair?a hundred and fifty dollars a year."?New York Tribune. DeWITT is "the name. When you go to buyWitch Hazel Salve look for the name DeWltt on every box. The unadulterated witch hazel is used in making DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve, which is the best salve in the world for cuts, burns, bruises, boils, eczema and piles. The popularity of DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve, due to its many cures, has caused worthless counterfeits to be placed on the market. The genuine bears the name E. C. DeWitt & Co. Chicago. Sold by H. F. Hoover, Bamberg, S. C. Bishop Talbot tells a story of a man he had met while bishop of Idaho, who wanted the bishop's opinion on the probability of his wife's going to heaven. The bishop said he told this Missourian that he was pretty sure his wife would reach there and suggested that he be confirmed, too, in order to take the same path. "No," said the bishop's friend, "I'm not good enough, but if my wife gets there ana the gates are shut so I can't get in she'll raise h 1." _ A PERFECT PAINLESS PILL is the one that will cleanse the system, set the liver to action, remove bile, clear the complexion, cure headache and leave a good taste in the mouth. The pills for doing such work pleasantly and effectually are DeWitt's Early Risers. Bob Moore, of Lafayette, Ind., s&ys: "All other pills | I have used gripe and sicken, while De- j Witt's Little Early Risers are simply per-; feet." Sold by Dr. H. F. Hoover. .| A cow belonging to Mr. R. W. Cayce, of Cayce, in Lexington, gave birth to twin calves Fridav night. One was white and the other black, and, according to the fitness of things in naming the Tittle bovines, the white one was called "Parker" and the black one "Roosevelt:"?Columbia Record. TAKB>T WITH CRAMPS. Wm. Kinase, member of a bridge gang working near Littleport was taken ill Thursday night with cramps and cholera. His case was so severe that he had to have members of the crew wait upon him and Mr. Gilford wascalledand consulted. He told them he had a medicine in the form of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera, and Diarrhoea Remedy that he thought would | help him and several doses were administered with the result that the fellow was able to be around next day. The incident speaks quite highly of Mr. Gilford's medicines.?Elkader, Iowa, Argus. This remedy never fails. Keep it in vour home, it may save life. For sale by Bamberg Phar; H. C. Rice. Denmark. Violent Attack of Diarrhoea Cured by Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy and Perhaps a Life Saved. "A short time ago I was taken with a violent attack of diarrhoea and believe I would have died if I had not gotten relief," says John J. Patton, a leading citizen of Patton, Ala. "A friend recommended Chamberlain's (Jolic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. I bought a 25c. bottle find after taking three doses of it was cured. I consider it the best remedy in the world for bowel complaints." For sale by Bamberg Pharmacy; H. C. Rice. "Why don't you ever want to go to a wedding?" snapped Mrs. Enpeck. I don't believe you've been to a wedding since you attended your own." "No," mildly responded Mr. Enpeck, "I haven't. And," he added softly to himself "T sometimes wish I hadn't attended that one." Judicial Ignorance. Last week a strapping negro woman was up before a magistrate, charged with unmercifully beating her boy. "I don't Understand how you can have the heart to treat your own child so cruelly," said the magistrate. "Jedge, has you been a parent of awufless yaller boy like dat dar cub of mine?" "Never?no, never," (with great vehemence?and getting red in the face.) "Den don't talk; you don't know nuffin ibout it." |. Quits. ' Because I am a railroad man," said George Gould, "railroad happenings and incidents interest me. My friends, aware of this, bring me whatever odd railroad news they come upon. Thus I heard the other day oi a gooa revenge. ' It seems that at a suburban station a train was starting off one morning when an elderly man rushed across the platform and jumped on one of the slowly moving cars. "The rear end brakeman, who was standing by, reached up and grabbed the old man's coat tails and pulled him off the train. "'There,' he said sternly, 'I have saved your life. Don't ever try to jump on like that again.' " 'Thank you,' said the old man calmly. 'Thank you for your thoughtful kindness. It is three hours till the next train, isn't it.' " 'Three and a quarter,' said the brakeman. "The long train meanwhile had been slowly gliding by, slowly gathering speed. Finally the last'car appeared. This was the brakeman's car, the oue for which he had been waiting, and, with the easy grace that is born of long practice, he sailed majestically on to it. "But the old gentleman seized bim by the coat and with a strong jerk, pulled him off, at the same time saying grimlv: - ^ *1 " 'Une gooa turn deserves uuuiua. i uu saved my"life; I have saved yours.
