Rice left last Saturday for an extended stay with relatives at Greenville and Spartanburg. ?Mrs. M. W. Hook with her mother and children, left Monday morning for a visit to relatives in Richland. ?Mrs. H. F. Spann, of Florida, arrived in the city Friday afternoon. She will spend some time with relatives here. ?Rev. M. W Hook is at Buford's Bridge this week, assisting Rev. Jno. G. Beck with in a protracted meeting at Mizpali church. ?Mr. James B. Spann, who has been living in Florida since last January, is at home on a visit, and his friends are glad to see him. * ?Mr. S. Blackwelder, superintendent of the oil mill, arrived here last week from Charlotte, N. C., where he has been ?b spending his vacation. ?Mr. H. G. Miss Leila left them at Columbia and went to Cheraw to visit Miss Nell Evans. - Court convenes in Walterboro next Monday, August 3rd. Only a few teachers from this county are attendiug the summer school at Blackville. Work is going on at the oil mill to have the ginnery and all machinery in readiness for operation when the season opens. 6. We have on exhibition at our office the largest ear of corn we ever saw. It was raised by E. F. Bellinger down 011 the Ashepoo river. It is certainly a tremendous ear of corn. Call and see it. Col. The court house here last week was almost like an oven, anil some of the court officials were almost prostrated from the excessive heat. The bar association, we understand, is discussing the matter of putting electric fans in the court room to be used during the summer terms of court. Col. J. F. Folk, Maj. Havelock Eaves, and Capt. J. B. Guess have been appointed commissioners for this county to get up a county exhibit for the Charleston :S Exposition. These appointments were made by the State commission, and these gentlemen work under the appropriation vs of $50,000 made by the legislature for a State exhibit. They cordially ask the aid and co-operation of all our citizens in ; making a creditable showing for this jg county at the Exposition, and will take pleasure in givingany desired information. Bring in your finest specimens of corn, cotton, sugar cane, and other field crops, as well as anything of any charac~ ter worthy of exhibiting. The "expense of preparing this exhibit will be paid by the State, so it will cost you nothing. Cash prizes will be given for the best exhibits. Will you please say in y(?ur paper that a revival meeting will begin in the Baptist church at this place on the fourth Sun-I day in August, and that the public, Christians of other denominations are cordially invited to all of these services, and that the pastor will be glad to have all Christian people join in with him for a glorious meeting and a great revival in the town. Let men go about the work in earnest for the Master, laving aside every thing else for the great work of bringing the lost to Christ. We hope that during the meeting all Elaces of business will be closed for one our each day, that the business men, together with the men in their employment, may attend the services. There is Sunday-school at the church every Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, J. B.
